We recently connected with Carina Herren and have shared our conversation below.
Carina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
After working as Registered Nurse for many years, I realized that for so long that I was operating on autopilot mode. Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do, but I became very task-oriented, just waking up, rinse and repeat on most days. I felt like I was slowly losing myself day by day, as the job can be overwhelmingly stressful with not a lot of room for autonomy or creativity. And then 7 years ago, I remembered how I always loved writing, fashion and so many other things. That’s when my blog, TheAgelessMillennial was born. I’m kinda over the name at this point actually but hey I feel like I have grown so much from when I first started. I find that other people have resonated with my posts and I do enjoy connecting with people from all over the world. I always loved being a part of the creative process, I learned that early on when I did some modeling in my younger years. I love that in this day and age, people embrace the idea that anyone, especially women are allowed to be multifaceted and not just strereo typed in a box of what society expects you to be. I started with sharing posts here and there about fashion and beauty, to working with brands I only dreamed of.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have my blog which is still my creative home and am proud to own my content even if all these platforms suddenly go haywire. I know most folks are all about the short form video content these days and I do like those too- to some degree. I’m mostly posting on IG since that’s where my audience is highly engaged. I like sharing style, beauty, lifestyle and travel content in a way that’s authentic to me. I understand that anyone can call themselves “influencer” these days, but real engagement, longevity, traffic, conversion, email lists, and brands that wanna work for you is actual work that doesn’t happen overnight. I believe that at the end of the day, people are going to engage with content they can resonate with, and for me that’s authenticity and that great content that wows the audience is something that will never change.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I believe that would be having an engaged audience and even if I haven’t posted for weeks or even months, are still loyal and there, appreciating my content. That to me is gold. Even if things aren’t perfect and I feel like my day’s not going the greatest, I feel like I’m surrounded by such an amazing community. It makes all the hard work so much worth it. I found some good friends in my circle that really uplift my spirits and I feel like that is absolutely the reason why social media exists.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
If you’re creator or even if you put your profile in public, it will always be a numbers game. You can’t help but compare yourself with others, why some has more followers, engagement, etc. And it’s really not normal to be looking at so much “content” at all times. One of my fave creators I admire, Kathleen Barnes, said it right on a podcast, “It doesn’t matter what that person next to you is doing, what matters is what you’re doing.” Comparison will always be there, but the reality is you have no idea what that person’s life is really like. Just as they have no idea of what my offline life is really like. Lots of people spend so much time “creating” and even hiring people to do this job. Some even 24/7. I remind myself that this is another side of me. I’m doing great being a Critical care nurse and saving lives and doing a shoot for a collab the next day. If my growth is not the same as my peers, that’s okay as I have learned that my health is more important than trying to push myself to my limits. I used to do it all, work non stop and then I would get sick and regretted it later. I now value that my health, my free time is more valuable to me. At the end of the day, all your followers, views, engagement doesn’t matter if you’re dead.
