We recently connected with Nathaniel Mccurley and have shared our conversation below.
Nathaniel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I have ever been a part of would be my band, Magenta Wave. It is a part of my soul, and I see it as a lifelong project.
Taylor (our lead guitarist) opened the door for me to fall in love with music in high school, and the plan to start a band was born, I had little conception of the path that I would take that has led me to where I am now. As I sit, it is impressive to reflect upon the fact that Magenta Wave is now a little over four years old.
My band is on a mission to make a career out of the very activity that brings us the most joy. Music is the means that authentically captures who we are as people. We absolutely love it. Passion like this is cultivated from the depths of emotional bliss. With our sights set high, it would be an honor, and a reward to hopefully soon share our music with the world in a manner that allows us to explore what this project truly has in store.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I fell in love with music playing drums on a bucket with a pair of chopsticks, while stoned with some friends at a park. It was spectacular. As simple as it may sound, it was the first time in a while that I felt free. This very idea of emotional expression (whether it be pain or pleasure) is part of the core identity of who Magenta Wave is as a band.
Growing up I played competitive sports, and was also a rigorous student. I bought into the idea early that talent was not gifted, but earned. Learning how to train, both physically and academically was a foundational skill for myself that translated towards the mastery of my instrument (the bass guitar) quite well.
Despite my budding desire to immerse myself with music, I was on a path to graduate college with a degree in International Business from Western Washington University. I did this with high marks, aligning my entrepreneurial spirit with the fruition of my band. As I begun to reach the last few quarters of my collegiate career, I understood the perfection of my position. I have both the professional and musical foundations to try and make our dreams a reality.
After graduation, we relocated from Bellingham to Seattle, where the band moved into a house together in the neighborhood of Magnolia. Things couldn’t have worked out better. After a full year of living together under the belt, it is clear that we owe much to this house in regards to growth.
What makes our band special? We are all in. I couldn’t envision a team of better individuals working together for a common goal. It is a privilege to be working with three other amazing people, all whom I would call brothers for life.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is providing people a platform to feel. I believe that emotion is a key component of the audience’s connection with art. When we can share a feeling while playing a show, we have accomplished our goal as a band. The depth and connection with feeling is one of the things that makes us so interesting as a species. With our music, emotion is everything.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Our goal as creators is to build as many quality interactions with people as we possibly can. Luckily we have many avenues to do this through. It is this connection with other people that makes being a creator so special.
