We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rashaun Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi RaShaun, thanks for joining us today. We’ve love to hear an interesting investment story – what was one of the best or worst investments you’ve made? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
The best investment I’ve made for my music career so far would have to be purchasing home studio equipment. I wanted to be able to record at any given time without the pressure of knowing that I’m paying for the time, even if I don’t use it all — for instance, recording in a studio session for 4 hours, but only being able to produce 2 songs. With home studio equipment, I can record whenever the creative energy is there at a moments notice, even if it’s 2am. Prior to this investment, I went through a period where I did not have a vehicle. So not only was I having to pay for the session, I didn’t even have a way to get to the studio.
The amount of money I’ve put towards my in home equipment is less than or equal to ONE four hour studio session, so my money has already been recouped after only a day or two.
RaShaun, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m RaShaun — a father, a husband, a recording artist, and I am unashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I started doing secular music as a young adult, but put it away after getting married and having children. Years later, I began podcasting as a hobby and decided to record an intro for my podcast. That one song developed into a Christian HipHop career after it was received well by my social media associates, friends, and family. That is when I realized that I could still pursue a music career even as a “family man” who no longer indulged in the things that secular rap music is known for.
However, even with my pursuit of Christian HipHop, I soon became aware that I was not like other “Christian” rappers. I didn’t only want to rap about basic Christian principles — such as, the love of God or the gospel — I wanted people to understand the POWER of God as it exists in modern times. I also carried a voice and a presence that was more comparable to classic or old school HipHop, rather than new school “viral” or “mumble” rap.
My online presence then caught the attention of a well known spiritual leader and prophet of our time, Prophet Lovy Elias. He shared my music to his personal page and spoke encouragement into my life, which inspired me to move across the country to Los Angeles, after living in Georgia my entire life.
In 2023, my family and I sold our house in Georgia and moved to LA without having a job lined up or housing lined up. We moved on faith. We have since been in full time pursuit of a Christian HipHop career. I have received songwriting credits and opportunities I would have not had back in my home town.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A week before our planned move to California from Georgia, I ruptured my Achilles tendon playing basketball.
Instead of taking this as a sign to not move, I chose to operate in resilience.
I had surgery to repair the rupture (which was also retracted 5cm) on a Monday, and we began our cross country journey that Friday. After only a few days of rest and recovery, I drove a U-Haul over 2,000 miles over 5 days. I was unable to bear weight on my left leg for 6 weeks or longer, then had to wear a walking boot and go through physical therapy. My leg still gives me pain at stiffness at times, but I continue to jump off any stage that presents itself and give 100% of my best effort for every concert or event.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When I first moved to California in October of 2023, I only had a little over 700 instagram followers. The first thing I did was clean up my social media accounts. I essentially deleted everything and started fresh.
The first reel I posted on instagram that began to gain traction, was a video of the prophecy I was given stating that “if you keep your eyes on Jesus, what God did with Lecrae, he will do 10x more with you.”
That video alone gained me over 1K followers. People wanted to see what I would do and if I would really “make it.” What I learned from that reel is that controversy sells. From that point onward I have consistently posted reels 2-3x a week, and I now have almost 2.5k followers. The growth has been slow and steady. The truth is, every one of us is only one reel or one post away from going “viral.” Be consistent, be controversial sometimes, and be funny.
It’s also helpful to have a sounding board to brainstorm with. My wife and I are the brains behind my social media. We give each other ideas and then work together to perfect what we post. Sometimes she’s even my camera man. Anybody with a smart phone can make engaging content, you just have to be consistent and want it bad enough.
