We recently connected with Broken Wires and have shared our conversation below.
Broken Wires, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
We are Broken Wires, an award-winning young rock band from Worcestershire, England, known for our catchy lyrics, groovy drumbeats, funky bass lines and punchy guitar riffs.
Featured on the BBC and having performed across England, Wales, Germany and the United States, we are excited to be releasing our debut album Author of Your World in October 2024.
Late one night, back in May 2019, we took to the stage at a popular music venue for an impromptu performance as part of the headline act’s encore. We (Henry and Frankie Fradgley) were just 10 and 12 and we were instantly hooked. We began writing our own music then performing it online to help raise funds for Punk4TheHomeless during Covid.
Post-lockdown, we joined forces with George Swift on drums and opened HopFest. It was the first of 50 performances that year. Continuing to write, we took our original songs over to America in April 2024, performing them acoustically in Los Angeles, New Orleans, Memphis and then, ultimately, at The Bluebird Café in Nashville.
Upon our return, we played to a firework finale at Rhine-on-Fire in Germany as part of a 10-festival line-up for summer 2024, joined by the epic Emma Powell on bass. Meanwhile, we were busy recording what has to be our most meaningful project: our debut album.
Our creative process begins with Henry’s riffs and lyrics, which we then jam together to thrash out the infectious rhythms and grooves. Our single The Merchant launched in August 2024, to much praise, and our album Author of Your World comes out at the start of October 2024, and will be available to stream across all platforms.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are singer-songwriter and rhythm guitarist Henry Fradgley, aged 15, lead guitarist Frankie Fradgley, 17, drummer George Swift, 17, and bassist Emma Powell, 18, from Worcestershire in England.
Our love of music comes from watching artists like the Rolling Stones, Paul Simon, Bonnie Raitt, Dream Theatre, James Taylor, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Scotty McCreery and Iron Maiden live on stage from very young ages. We all knew we wanted to make our own music and perform on the stage ourselves, first picking up our instruments at around the age of six.
Inspired by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Van Halen and AC/DC, our happy place (aside from being on stage) is band practice where we spend hours jamming new tunes, refining lyrics and thrashing out solos ahead of our live gigs.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Seeing people’s faces light up when they hear new and original music is the most rewarding feeling. We love creating hard-hitting riffs that get stuck in people’s heads, being playful on stage and coming out into the crowd for epic guitar solos. The whoops and applause are what drive us to be our best.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Our dream is to take Broken Wires on tour, playing our original rock music to music fans across the globe. For us, there is no Plan B, And our mission is to keep rock music and venues alive, encouraging more people to embrace the joy of making and sharing music.
