We were lucky to catch up with Rachel Ngayan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Growing up was hard for myself, and my only sibling (twin sister). Our mother had some mental health issues which made it difficult for us to be close to her emotionally.
My father luckily stepped up to the plate and made sure that both my sister and myself felt valued and appreciated. He never pressured us to do anything we did not want to do, and was always there for us emotionally. He had a great sense of humor and I always admired his go with the flow attitude towards life. I realized from a young age that making someone feel comfortable, or being able to make them laugh really goes a long way.
The biggest thing I took from growing up was that it didn’t matter how “book smart” you were; Having empathy and compassion for others and being able to rationalize certain situations is really what matters in adulthood. I did not go to college, and started working at the age of 18 in the dental field. I found that my attitude towards people and positive outlook is really what made me succeed, and want more for myself once I become a mother. I credit a lot of these characteristics to my father who has the best “quirky” dad personality, and I am forever grateful!

Rachel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I run a small business providing beauty services to women of all ages/races ! I am a certified permanent makeup artist specializing in eyebrows enhancement services. What sets me apart is I take my time to get to know each client and their needs on a personal level, so that they feel comfortable and happy with the outcome ! I do not pressure or push my clients into anything they are not comfortable with, and offer free consultations to ensure their ultimate satisfaction. I also keep my pricing on the low end of the cosmetic tattoo industry so that I can help more women obtain these services. Making someone feel even more beautiful and confident is what makes me truly love the art that I do !

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Being transparent with my clients has always helped me. Most of my clients find me through word of mouth, or on Google because of my great reviews. I am a trustworthy business owner whose ultimate goal is caring for my clients on a personal level more than a dollar figure.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I absolutely love the business I chose, however if I could re do anything, it would be to do more research on where to do in person training. The training in general is very expensive, and you only get on average 2-3 days of in person training, while having to learn most of the skill by practicing at home/repetition. After spending thousands of dollars on training and supplies, you are then left to figure out how to start your own business from scratch. I had no previous business knowledge, and did not have the income to rent a booth as a new artist. I had to invest much more than I anticipated in order to succeed. Unfortunately, many artists are left with little to no options after training making this a challenging field in general.
