We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sara Hallajian. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sara below.
Sara, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
After co-owning a salon for several years, I had a clear vision of the core values and atmosphere I wanted for my own salon while I incorporated my Trichology practice within it. Finding the perfect location was a top priority, and while I had to learn a lot about working with contractors, budgeting, and securing finances, I enjoyed the research and felt confident in my choices. Now, nearly three years in, I’m glad I stayed true to my vision and brought in people who shared it. Every decision, from the glassware to the products we carry, was intentional and aligned with the kind of clients I wanted to attract. My advice to anyone starting a business is to take calculated risks. It’s important to have the financial resources to realize your vision, as it will ultimately give you the freedom and autonomy to run your business your way.

Sara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I opened Âme, a sustainable & clean hair salon in Santa Monica in spring of 2022. I am a Certified Trichologist with the International Association of Trichologists (IAT). I have a passion for combining the art of hair care with the science of scalp health. My journey into business ownership began after co-owning a salon for several years, where I discovered exactly what I wanted my own salon to represent—core values centered around personalized care and wellness along with being Green Certified in sustainability practices. When I opened my own salon, I was committed to creating a space that offered more than just beauty services; I wanted a place where clients felt seen, heard, and cared for, with every detail intentionally chosen, from the products we use to the experience we provide.
Navigating the challenges of building a business while raising my two young boys has been both demanding and rewarding. Balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship has taught me resilience and time management, and it has deepened my sense of purpose. I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve been able to create, not just for my family, but for my clients, who trust me with their hair and scalp health. I also understood that creating a space where stylists could thrive has been critical to the success and longevity of my business.
As a Certified Trichologist, I’ve always believed in the importance of continuous learning. I stay up to date with the latest advancements in treating hair loss, regularly attending workshops and pursuing additional certifications such as the Integrative Health Practitioner Certification. This commitment to growth allows me to offer the most effective treatments for my clients, from addressing hair loss to managing scalp disorders and ultimately helping them regain their confidence.
What I’m most proud of, though, is the drive I continue to have to learn and grow—both as a person and a professional. Whether it’s helping a client feel their best or setting an example for my sons, I’m motivated by the impact I can have on the lives of others. I believe in taking every opportunity to improve, not just for myself, but so I can better serve my clients and my community.
When I’m not working, I love spending time with my boys in Santa Monica and exploring new ways to continue my personal development journey.

Can you talk to us about your experience with selling businesses?
I spent several years as a co-owner of a hair salon, after working as a stylist, which gave me valuable insight into the business and what changes were needed for real growth. While I faced many challenges during that time, the experience ultimately gave me the confidence I needed to pursue my larger vision which led me to sell my half and start my own business. Becoming a mother during the pandemic also made me realize that I needed to go out on my own to fully achieve my goals. Thankfully, I had a strong partnership agreement in place, and I was able to utilize a buy/sell clause, which allowed me to sell my ownership at a profit. Although it was a really difficult process that affected many people, it was the best decision for me. Selling my ownership provided the financial foundation to invest in my new business, and it transformed my life for the better. For anyone out there with a bigger dream of business ownership it’s ok, and necessary, to take small steps to reach your goals.

Any advice for managing a team?
While maintaining high morale is a great goal in any industry, I believe it’s unrealistic to expect it 100% of the time as everyone has their own path they want to take which is unique to each individual. It’s natural to experience some ups and downs, but as long as the low points are brief and lead to growth, things will work out in the long run. To foster a positive work environment that helps with morale, I lead by example as an active owner working within the business. I also prioritize quarterly team check-ins to stay connected with my staff. Additionally, I ensure that teamwork is a core value in my hiring process, so new team members understand the importance of maintaining a supportive and collaborative atmosphere all while providing great services to our clients.
