We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Fredrick Hunter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
FREDRICK, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
Being misunderstood/ mischaracterized is something I’ve dealt with alot in my life as I’m sure so many have.
It hit differently when I began to put myself out here as an actor, and I can say 5 years in and I still have barriers to break through with it.
As an actor we ALL have unique journeys, highs and lows forsure. That being said there are times we can nail a role so well or have a specific look that put us in a box, (Meaning viewers, casting directors, producers, only see you one way) which they call type-cast. And I’m learning it is so hard to break from them shackles and to be seen as someone who can deliver in more than just that one role they see you fit in. Now im always thankful for every opportunity to display my art but the passion and competitive spirit I carry won’t allow me to ever stay boxed in, which I would offer that same mentality as my advice to any new actor trying to make their leap.
You just have to know in the back of the mind and in your heart that your time is approaching and continue to deliver stellar performances and to always remain having faith.
Keep that chin up, we got this!

FREDRICK, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well my name is Fredrick M Hunter , and I am a Actor from here in Cleveland.
I developed a passion for the craft early, being highly impressed with actors performances on stage in theater. But at those ages didn’t have the courage to go for it so I stuck with what I was good at playing sports. But fast forward to a few courses in HS for production, and a drama course in college, all the way to Quarantine which is where I found the time to stick my nose out there. Hit the ground pretty quick from monologues I would post consistently on social sites, and got the attention of directors which led to my first audition and first role as a bad cop in Tyler Thomas film Leviticus. Haven’t looked back since!
I feel like my passion for the craft and story will touch others and let them know it’s never too late and you are not alone out here.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I have a LONG story, and I don’t want to be long winded with this interview but theres something i definitely would like to share.
Honestly I normally wouldn’t speak on this topic but as an advocate I feel it’s necessary in this moment. I suffer from depression and have for a long time now. Im proud to say that I am a survivor, but its unfortunately unlike so many that felt they couldn’t manage and let go. And I feel for every last one of them that I learn about in time.
Depression is very real and should be recognized as soon as possible. Seek therapy or just speak to someone, ANYONE who cares for your well being. You don’t have to battle this alone.
I can humbly say, even thru the 10 years I’ve been battling I’ve still manage to fight for my dreams and I PROMISE you can too! You are not alone and I speak for us all when I say WE are in this together ♥️.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I feel as any creative there’s ALOT that goes into making the dream a reality in some shape or form, and most can’t seem to grasp why we continue
to try, especially when majority of your early work is done without compensation. The instant gratification is what most look for and the most common thought from outsiders of the craft is that we are paid instantly or it’s a either you got or don’t type situation. Well like most crafts as an actor you’re lucky to find a paying gig let alone a big opportunity to showcase your talent. It’s all about persistents, timing, and loving the craft wholey so in turn it will love you back, plus some luck as well. But the journey is what make the actor, the pain, disappointment, the happy, the sad, the anxiousness of will I get the call back, the relief of the congratulations. IT ALL is what makes you and the characters that you will eventually create in the, and molds you into being a great artist not to mention toughens your skin. And from what I’ve notice after reading and hearing stories of all the Top Tier actors, at that point the big break hits or it’s just around the corner.
Never quit on something you love deeply.
