We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gudy Prada. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gudy below.
Alright, Gudy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I’ve been fortunate to work in the creative field since the early stages of my career. It’s been a learning journey, and over the years, I’ve gained experience by going through the ups and downs. When I first started, I had no idea how to price my time and skills. It was also challenging because I needed to build a portfolio, which meant relying on people willing to give me opportunities to work on their music. This made the initial steps more difficult, as I had to balance earning a living with delivering high-quality work that could attract future projects.
Once those first steps were in place, things started to improve. I learned how to go through different situations and better understand how to manage my work. One key lesson I’ve learned is that, in order to make a full-time living in this industry, you need to be versatile. In music, this could mean playing an instrument, recording, editing, and sometimes even mixing. Being versatile allows you to take on multiple roles, which not only increases your income but also gives you a broader understanding of the entire creative process.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change much. Moving slowly through this process was also key to understand how it all works. In the beginning, when you’re looking for opportunities to show your talent, it’s okay to charge less if the project helps build your portfolio. This gradual process is something everyone should go through and I think there’s no better way to learn.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, I’m Gudy Prada. My journey with drums began at age 12 in a small town in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Early on, I played in bands with friends during high school, which gave me valuable experience performing on stage from a young age. These early experiences were very important to me, as they taught me a lot through hands-on experience. After finishing high school, I pursued my studies at the “Escuela de Música Contemporánea” in Buenos Aires. It was there that I really worked on my skills, and the structured environment pushed me to become disciplined and focused in order to reach a professional level.
During my time there, I had my first gigs as a session drummer for solo artists. That was the time when I realize that this was my place, collaborating on other people’s music and helping bring their creative visions to life. Whether in the studio or on stage, my goal as a drummer has always been to make the process as seamless as possible and deliver the best results. During all this time, I’ve developed my own methods to ensure that I give my full potential, always trying to create a collaborative environment where the music is the top priority and we work together as a team.
In addition to drumming, I’ve worked as a mix engineer, handling projects that have already been recorded. Being on both sides of the production process has given me a much broader perspective. All this experience allowed me to make more objective decisions in the mixing process, and helped me better understand producers when I’m on the other side of the glass during a recording session. It has significantly improved the quality of my work, as I now approach each project with a deeper understanding of the entire creative process, beyond just performing.
What sets me apart I think is how deeply I invest in every project. I treat each one as if it were my own, digging into every detail to ensure the music reaches its fullest potential. My attention to detail, and the friendships I build with artists, creates a comfortable environment for collaboration. This connection helps and enhances the creative process and allows us to push and develop the sound to its highest level.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love working on projects because they leave a lasting impact long after they’re created. Being involved in these projects means collaborating with others as part of a team, and working together over a period of time. The journey and experiences you gain throughout the process are, in my opinion, the most rewarding part. Everything I’ve learned in life has come from these experiences. Since music is all about creation and discovery, I think it’s the best way to enjoy each day while learning lessons that stay with you for life.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Working in this industry demands more than your 100%, it requires total commitment. This means you might not always have time to see friends, family, or pursue other activities as often as you’d like. In the beginning, this can be tough for some, as it involves long hours in the studio or traveling for gigs. However, those who truly know you will understand the depth of your passion and how seriously you take your work. By giving your best and keeping professionalism, we show them why you dedicate so much time and effort to your craft.
