We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andrea Artenstein a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Andrea , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, what do you think about family businesses? Would you want your children or other family members to one day join your business?
Working together has added a whole new layer to our relationship as a family in a very special way. We’ve been able to recognize all of our collective talents and how each of us can bring something really specific to add to the greater success of Java Earth. We all have our own niche, by brother Alex is front of house, my dad is the numbers person and my mom is in charge of the food component/creative side while I focus on marketing and branding. The whole process has formed a unique bond that I feel very lucky to have.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After studying consumer psychology and working in fashion, beauty, market research and email marketing in the corporate world, I decided I wanted to shift my career into something smaller with more flexibility. When I joined my family working with Java Earth in 2018, I slowly developed my own role and oversaw our rebrand to help continue evolving the business. Through Java Earth I’ve been able to apply all I’ve learned in the past in terms of brand consistency and awareness to really immerse myself in the family business. I’ve had the advantage of knowing the brand from day one, well before I started working with it, so it’s been able to add to the amount of dedication for what we do and an understanding of who we are. Now we’re extremely proud of our newest location in La Jolla that we hope will expand upon what we’ve built in North PB, a place for people to feel at home.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
With our North PB location, my parents have taken a very grassroots approach to building the business. Through that experience we have learned the power of community. At Java Earth, we’re about so much more than simply selling coffee. For us, it’s about selling an experience where we like to make everyone feel as if they’re at our summer house. That whole experience from the moment you walk in the door is what matters the most to us.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
For us, it comes down to being consistent and collaborating with partners that make sense and share a likeminded vision with similar goals. Again, it goes back to selling an experience that makes them want to come back.
