We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gabriel Alejandro. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gabriel below.
Gabriel , appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I’d never done Improv before but one day I decided I wanted to try it because I thought it would help me out as an actor. So I moved to Colombia, a place I’d never been before, to do a Long-Form Improv certificate at El Bosque University in Bogotá. It was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. I learned a lot about myself as a performer, but also as a person. I built personal relationships with people that continue to be in my life (this was in 2018) and ti reaffirmed my love for performing and I knew I could never do anything else.
Gabriel , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I knew I wanted to be an actor since I was in elementary school, but I didn’t do any acting at all until I was in high school. I started my undergrad in Industrial Microbiology but after 2 years finally decided to make the switch to Drama, without telling my parents. Oopsie. Everyone thought I was going to be the doctor in the family but I just wanted to play one on tv. I’m proud of myself for following my instincts and sticking with it. I was not very good in the beginning and part of me wondered if I had made the right choice but I knew I loved it too much to give up on it too quickly. And because you’re not good at something immediately doesn’t mean you won’t be eventually or that it’s not meant for you. So I kept training and working hard and now it’s what I do for a living.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I trained at the Shakespeare Theater Company Academy where I got an MFA in Classical Acting. One of my dreams is to be part of a Classical Theater Company that it’s exclusively latiné performers.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I look for interviews of my favorite actors and directors and hear how they talk about their work and their process and that has helped me immensely in rethinking my approach to auditions, character creation, professional expectations, etc.
