We recently connected with Denise Lamoureux and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Denise, thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
I owned a restaurant for 26 years. And on the outside it looked like everything was fabulous but inside I was a mess. I Suffered from anxiety and panic attacks and low self-esteem. I began to drink too much Chardonnay. I went off and studied Eastern medicine because nothing in Western medicine could help me at the time this was 1996-2005.
One day, the building behind my restaurant, which was my office and my food storage was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. I rebuild the building for zoning with no idea what I was gonna do with it. It became a wellness center, and Healers started coming from all over the world.
That lightning strike was my defining moment as It changed the trajectory of my career. That’s when I began to study trauma and addiction and the neurobiological system. And I created the Colette technique.™️ Core trauma healing. I’ve had that private practice now for over 10 years.
Denise, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was very blessed in my careers. They lasted very long and were successful.
Owning a Restaurant for 26 years, was a great experience, even though the work was very hard. I had worked my way through college, waiting tables and bartending. I had started in an ice cream shop when I was 16 years old. I learned to cook and managed restaurants after I got out of school. So that gave me the discipline at the age of 29 to buy a restaurant and to remain professional and remember that it is every little thing that makes your restaurant the one everyone wants to go to
Before I became a healer, I studied eastern medicine for many years. I owned a wellness center For a few years, and while I was not being a healer at that time, I was promoting other healers. During that time I got the opportunity to study with all the healers and sit in on all their healing sessions. I got to watch discipline and create it into my own.
I then went off to study trauma and addiction. I spent two years at most of the conferences that Dr Gabor Mate spoke at. I was able to not only watch his dedication to his work, but his compassion and his kindness. That gave me what I needed to become a healer in my own right and start my own private practice by creating my own modality of healing, which is different from anything I have ever had anyone do. I’ve come across also has pieces of the things I’ve learned over the years
We’d appreciate any insights you can share with us about selling a business.
having a successful business, gives you more ease and grace when you’re ready to sell. I was blessed that after 26 years my restaurant had really become a landmark. I called the gentleman who was a real estate In the commercial field and also a fellow restaurant owner himself. I asked him if he would be my broker and he said no I’ll buy it and I literally sold my restaurant in one day.
But that was not luck and that did not come easy. That came from hard work and integrity and honesty and caring about your clients and your customers and treating your staff with respect. So that every area of your business is impeccable as you can make it and yet it is always infused with love you for the business you created . That gives you the opportunity to sell with ease
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
my story of resilience is a long journey. I grew up in a house where you shoved your emotions down and No one talked about the alcoholism or all the other crazies that went on in the house when we were children.
I dropped out of high school in my junior year. Not because I was not smart but because no one was sending me to school. So what 14/15-year-old is going to get up and get her to school in the morning.
I ended up getting my GED and getting to college the same year as the rest of my classmates
So in so many ways, I have felt like a failure. I have felt not good enough not worthy. And I have certainly felt like I didn’t matter. So I needed to overcome that in someway. The restaurant business gave me an opportunity to build my own family. By this point, I was a young single mom. I had divorced when my children were little. I had two boys to raise and a restaurant run. Sometimes sleep was not part of that journey.. But my passion for my restaurant for my staff, and most importantly, for my children kept me going, even though Chardonnay and alcohol absolutely got in the way. I’ve been sober many years now. But allthese things have been part of my resilience
