We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Misty Renee. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Misty below.
Misty, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The story behind Skin + Halo comes from my personal experiences. I often found myself excited for a facial or self-care treatment, only to leave feeling disappointed because the experience was more clinical than relaxing. I realized there was a gap in the industry for a space where women could not only see noticeable results but also truly unwind. That’s why I created Skin + Halo—a luxurious, private studio offering effective skincare and head spa treatments in a serene, calming environment. My mission is to provide a sanctuary where women can indulge in self-care, leaving both their skin and spirit rejuvenated.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always been passionate about the beauty industry, especially skincare. Throughout my life, I considered getting licensed, but the timing and finances never seemed to align. After moving to Michigan from NYC and repeatedly being disappointed with my monthly facials, I began envisioning the kind of place I wanted to visit—a space that combined results with relaxation. At 50, I decided it was finally time to pursue my dream. I enrolled in esthetics school and earned my license. While in school, I rented a space and collaborated with a designer to create a calming, zen-like environment, ensuring everything was ready by the time I graduated. Creating this space was just as important to me as offering treatments with real results. I wanted to build a sanctuary where women could feel like VIPs, completely unwind, and de-stress.
Inspired by viral social media videos of Japanese Head Spa treatments, I traveled across the country for in-person training and became certified as a Holistic Scalp Practitioner. I’m also a certified Anti-Aging Specialist in addition to being a licensed esthetician. Seeing my dreams come to life has been incredibly rewarding, especially since I started a new career at 50. I absolutely love what I do, and helping women feel incredible brings me immense satisfaction.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I spent 10 years living in NYC, building a career. I worked for Stuart Parr & Cousins Entertainment as their Financial Controller, managing all of Eminem’s merchandise accounting. Later, I became the Operations Manager for philanthropist and women’s rights activist Loreen Arbus. Working alongside her and witnessing the incredible work she’s done gave me the opportunity to meet like-minded women such as Jane Fonda, Gloria Steinem, Gloria Allred, and many others. Gloria Steinem even referred to me as ‘Loreen’s lioness at the gate.’ While I thoroughly enjoyed my time in NYC, I was offered the opportunity to work remotely, which led me to move back to my home state of Michigan to be closer to family.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As I got older, I began to truly appreciate life. I used to take it for granted. When my mom would say, ‘Just wait until you get older,’ as I teased her for forgetting simple things, I would laugh it off. But turning 50 was life-changing for me. It was a confusing time because, in my mind, I was still the fun-loving, adventurous 30-year-old, always dreaming up my next adventure. I started revisiting the dream of becoming a licensed esthetician but kept talking myself out of it, thinking I was ‘too old.’
One day, while scrolling through Facebook, I came across an ad with Martha Stewart talking about how she didn’t start her business until she was 50. In that moment, I could almost feel the incredibly smart, talented, and amazing women I had been fortunate to meet putting their hands on my back, telling me I was never too old. That was when I decided to look into schools. One of the requirements was a high school diploma, and since I graduated in 1991, I thought, ‘There’s no way I still have it, and if I do, I wouldn’t know where to look.’ But wouldn’t you know, the first box I opened in the basement had it right on top. Chills ran through my body, and I knew it was time to follow my dream.
I was terrified of being the ‘old lady’ in class, but I was so silly to feel that way. My classmates were warm and welcoming. Our class ranged in age from 18 to 50, and we developed a sisterly bond. It was a truly great experience. I graduated last May, got licensed in June, and started taking clients in August. While I’m off to a slow start, I believe that slow and steady wins the race. I know I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
If it weren’t for all the amazing and supportive women I’ve connected with throughout my life, I’m not sure I would have followed through with this. I love helping women feel beautiful and confident, letting them know that it’s OK to age naturally with grace while still feeling and looking beautiful.
