We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cassia Dawn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Singer/Songwriter (sounds like Norah Jones meets Jack Johnson.)
I primarily am an artist, but have written music for Indie projects as well as done voice over work.
I believe most of life is lived in the “in between.” In between the dreams and the doubts.
So many of my fans are in the middle ground of cultures/expectations/their own fears… etc. They need to know they aren’t the only ones who don’t know. The only ones with questions and best guesses. Music has always been part of what’s gotten me through and made the world small enough I could see the little speck of light showing me a path forward. I endeavor to write music that can be a companion for my fans. A lantern in the darkness. I don’t have all the answers, but I do have hope and that’s where I write from.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When have I not had to pivot =)
Really life is about changing directions, evaluating what isn’t working and trying new things.
When I was 17, I was going to be on Gotee records and tour around the country.
When I was 19, I was going to be in a rock band.
When I was 22 I was in an Indie/Jazz duo.
When I was 24 I moved out of state to go to music school.
When I was 25 I returned broke and took business/music classes at community college.
When I was 28 I moved to Nashville.
When I was 30 I started releasing a song a month (mostly working with different producers and playing with genre.)
and the story goes on =)
We aren’t born knowing anything and the only way we find out what we want is by trying.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I would have known that there’s nothing wrong with asking for help. I really felt like I needed to do almost everything by myself because of feeling unworthy. I think that’s slowed my career progress. I wish I could have seen myself as I do now, as a passionate young artist worth investing in.
I also wish I would have known that rejection is part of the deal and it doesn’t qualify the value of what you do. There will always be more nos than yeses. You will always be acquired taste and that’s actually alright. It makes the people who like you really like you.
