We were lucky to catch up with Justina Lesassier recently and have shared our conversation below.
Justina, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Over the course of your career, have you seen or experienced your field completely flip-flop or change course on something?
As a licensed Esthetician in the beauty industry, I noticed the field took a sharp U-turn with the rise of social media. Social media has given everyone a voice and the means to influence. With this, we have not only celebrities and doctors showcasing their knowledge about skin and skincare, but the average person that is not even in the profession. It’s become so inundated that It can, at points discredit the professional with a license.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I became a licensed Esthetician in 2009 where my career began in the scope of cosmetic lasers. I was tired of the corporate grind and Esthetics gave me purpose. Not only allowing me to make people feel good about themselves, but giving me opportunity to show my child that you can live in your passion and make a great living. All of my clients receive individualized treatments, each time they come to see me. I base their treatments on my analysis of their skin at that time. I prescribe professional products for them to use consistently at home. With this combination, their desired results are achieved. One thing I am known for is my facial massage. The facial muscles and nerves are often neglected and I ensure that I take my time. By doing this, not only will the client have noticable changes in the firmness and tightness of their skin, they will also become extremely relaxed. The greatest compliment is when my clients fall asleep. One thing I am most proud of is my continued growth and self motivation within this industry. It allows me to continue to provide the best services to my clients and stay relevant in the industry.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Networking with other individuals in the industry is extremely helpful and important. As you get to know like minded individuals, you also learn more and can make lifelong connections. These connections can take your career in different directions, which keeps things interesting.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
While I will always remain in the field of Esthetics and continue to provide my services, I am currently working towards a degree to pivot the career for personal reasons. I am currently enrolled in a University for Medical Laboratory Technician. The goal is to bridge the two careers together. As a lab tech, I will be able to get behind the scenes of cosmetic and skincare chemistry and formulations. Product ingredients and skincare formulation is of major interest to me. Without the understanding of how skin care works and what the ingredients are doing, we cannot fully prescribe correctly to our clients. Since I have this knowledge, I want to take it one step further.
