We were lucky to catch up with Maddy Corbin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maddy, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
My journey in the digital marketing world started way before we called Influencers “Influencers” I began posting and sharing my life online as an Instagram content creator in 2016. The first paid campaign that I have record of was in 2018 with the brand Ardene, an inclusive women’s intimate brand. It was a super small campaign, just 1 post required and a handful of images sent over to the brand for their use. I had started seeing the possibilities in this digital-sphere around this time. For the years prior I had just accepted item gifting in exchange for content. This was my first “oh shit” moment when I realized more income was to be generated than just product value.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I come from a young entrepreneurial background. In my teen years I developed, launched & ran 2 small LLC companies. I always had the drive and desire to create my own things and learn on my own. I started sharing my personal life online as I noticed theses businesses translating well online, and having a unique story to tell of my own upbringing. A lot of this world is trial and error and I will 100% always stand by that. Especially during a time when so much of the industry was an unknown. But just like my love for figuring the business stuff out on the fly, I quickly became enamored with the concept of “bloggers” which is what we called online personalities as the time instead of “influencers”
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I feel like my goal or mission has changed over the years as my style, interests and ideas have. Over the last year I have had the opportunity to connect with more people online than ever before. I find myelf most driven just to share my own passions as authentically as I can which typically translates into my more spunky language, truthful voiceovers and calling my audience my “beautiful bitches” I think it comes down to being a place where my audience members can explore their own creative interests while being 100% themselves even if that is not the norm or what we normally see online. That uniqueness is what turns over incredible successfully.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Copying and pasting what other creators are doing will not grow you. Early on I found this was easiest to do because I felt like I was in unfamiliar territory. But the more I got comfortable with myself, my own content creation & audience—and started being the weird, funny, and wild me is when the real growth started. It sounds cheesy, but damn does it work.
