We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Diego Bonilla a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Diego, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
Great question! In my industry, the development of Artificial Intelligence changed the ease and ways of accomplishing projects from copywriting to even social media growth and even photo/video editing. It is constantly growing at a rapid pace which sadly may end a lot of jobs for people in the industry.
I have not had a situation yet happen with my creative services, but have been able to use to my advantage to help with some self marketing aspects online. I am not a copywriter so at times I do use AI to help me write trendy or professional descriptions either for social media or for my website.
I believe that you will always need a human to be able to accomplish projects in the video/photo business and graphic design. AI or robots can’t completely run it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was born in Colombia and came to the United States at 5 years old. I lived in Connecticut for 5 years then moved to Florida. While living in Connecticut, I remember taking cartoon drawing classes to learn something new and I was intrigued by it.
I was always a fan of the creative world. I thank skateboarding in a sense because it really just opened up my eyes to seeing things in a different way and learning about the artistic side (magazines, skateboard graphics, etc) I was not a full artist myself, but I always was interested. I took a couple art courses in high school and in college. I originally studied business but then got bored of it and decided to switch to graphic design which I am happy I did.
I learned a lot in arts college and it really helped me to enhance my skills not only as a designer but also photographer and videographer.
When I get clients, I always do my best to work with them to offer the best creative solution to their needs. There are always clients that do not know what they want or how my services work, but I like to sit down and chat and break things down so its easy for them to understand.
I have had some clients that have been happy with my work such as Changing Lives of Boca Raton, which is a non profit organization dedicated to helping homeless or underprivileged people in the streets a better life.
Another one which I am proud to have been apart of since the beginning is Drop In Action Sports Complex. I helped bring the idea into reality of opening up an action sports complex for skateboarders,BMX riders, other action sports to enjoy. I put my skill sets to the test in branding the park, managing social media, and creating a clean website. The park lasted 7 wonderful years until its closing in October of 2022
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
To fund all the gear I have now, It took years. I have always had a job so worked hard to save up money and buy the gear I need from cameras to lighting and PC work station.
I never bought a lot all at once. I would do it little by little based on my needs and when I had enough money to pay.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative person is seeing other people happy with my work and for me is always seeing the idea/vision I would have in my head come to life successfully.
