We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Abby Reimers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Abby, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve always said ever since my little child brain could consciously hold a memory, I was never not singing. In the living room of the house I grew up in, there was a small square of wood flooring and the rest was carpet. I would stand on the wooden square as if it was Madison square garden and sing at the top of my lungs, waving to the little individual pieces of fabric like they were screaming fans. My dream has always been big and loud, knocking at the cages of my heart since it was formed. I knew I wanted to make an impact, make people feel their human experience like I felt whenever I would cry from a sad scene, or laugh hysterically from a funny one, or look out the window longingly while listening to a beautiful song. Something in me yearned to make people feel, and help them connect to the power of creativity. Getting into musical theater in high school just sky rocketed those opportunities for me. Leading me to a performing arts college, getting an event from that, and now navigating this big world as a creative individual. Now I am mainly focused on making my own music under the stage name Bluejeanbabiee, creating soulful rnb with a hint of pop but more genre bending to come! This journey has filled my heart and brought so many possibilities that I could have never dreamed of. And I am so grateful every step of the way. Being a creative can take its toll on you at times, but at the end of the day it’s brings humanity together. And I am so grateful to share my imagination, ideas, and melodies to the world. Sharing pieces of your heart to those who see you for who you are and can relate will always be worth it. In the words of my late grandpa, “keep trying and never give up, the road doesn’t end because you don’t know where it goes. Lead with an open heart and keep. Moving. Forward.”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started making music around 2018, only making it for fun until I realized this was something I was extremely passionate about. I worked more on my craft during the pandemic, granted it still wasn’t at its best but that’s how I got to where I am now! Somewhere around 2019/2020 is when I came up with the name Bluejeanbabiee, taking direct inspiration from Elton John’s first line in the iconic song “Tiny Dancer”. I really got into the industry once I moved back to LA after graduating college, going to networking events and starting to collab and create with other artists. I still use BandLab on my phone to record music to this day and I finessed a way to make it sound professional. Fool proof as I like to call it. People are always surprised when I tell them I recorded this on my phone, and also surprised when they hear me sing for the first time. My mom raised me on Otis Redding, Lauren Hill, Amos Lee, and my three brothers heavily influenced my music taste with Hip Hop and rnb in the 2000’s. So I definitely have a wide facet of interests and inspirations. I found my own interests as I grew up too, classic rock, hyper pop, alternative, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, the list goes on and on. But any form of music I could get my hands on I was all about. I take that music and those artists with me in every step of my creative endeavors, excited for where I’m going but never forgetting where I came from. I love music with my whole being and I feel so lucky everyday that I have the ability to create my own and actually enjoy it too.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
NETWORKING!!! I know it sounds so cliche and everyone talks about it, but honestly networking has changed my life. It kind of sucks that the industry is like this but at the end of the day it’s who you know. So go out there and make yourself known to these people! Talking and showing off your work to a room full of creatives who are on the same journey as you, and higher ups who are looking for new fresh faced artists is exactly the place you need to be if this is your dream. I’ve collaborated with crazy talented artists, have performed venues with people I’ve connected with, and have even talked with big name producers and record label officials. Even if it’s not for a bigger opportunity it’s an amazing experience to meet these people and get longing questions answered. So that your knowledge and navigation of this industry grows stronger and stronger.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Look, I know it’s inevitable for there to be starving artists. It’s a risk we take jumping into our dreams. It saddens me to see the “industry plant” wave or record label modified music and content solely created to make people immediately interested. It never feels authentic, so I think to create a thriving creative ecosystem we can uplift those artists who we truly love and enjoy. Driving likes and views for them, sharing them with everyone we think will like them too, gate keeping can be fun but for the artists sake, share! I know it’s a bit to ask for, but this is how we create with industry we want to see.
