Today we’d like to introduce you to Lot Winther
Hi Lot, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have found joy in creation as long as I can remember. Since I was a kid, I was curious to learn to master pencils and brushes and create and storytell through them. I would look at my great grandfather’s figure drawings of beautiful Italian women from his travels, and I so adored them. Eventually I studied women’s fashion and developed my artistic voice – in the fashion world my medium would be decorating women, and in my aspiring art world, I’d portray them just as they are. Over time, my childish joy i´with water merged with the figurative feminine, and my art is now telling stories of women’s liberation and freedom through my oil paintings.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an artist is rarely a smooth road, but as a person, I find some spark in obstacles. The true challenge when starting out to pursue art professionally was to find my voice, what I wanted to say with my work and how. An older, more experienced colleague urged me to take all the time I needed, and so I did. Ironically enough, my style has emerged rather quickly, Once I let go of expectations toward myself, and I’m currently in a phase of exploring more depths in my visuals. I’ve come to love the processes, although they can be frustrating at times!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I almost exclusively work with feminine and feministic visual art. My favourite medium is water soluble oil paint, because it both gives me the freedom of water and forgiveness of the oil. I’m proud of the fact that you can always see it’s my work, and these years I’m exceptionally proud of my project Hall of Femme in which my fellow artist Frederikke Have and I are portraying the 50 Danish women that are writing feminist history as we speak.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Not only do I work for feminism, I also work feministically. I’m still in awe of my own productivity, since I started working according to my female cycle and quit obeying to the male 9-5 cycle – and I encourage any woman to get smarter on their own selves and bodies rather than pursue fitting into a patriarchal society.
