Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Miguel Perez
Hi Sean Miguel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Both of my brands, Q&Agent and Sean Michael Management were a result of helping actors understand the business of Show Business.
As a working actor, I wanted to know how the industry worked so I started as an intern for my Talent Agent. As he was a great salesman due to his previous experience before becoming an agent, I learned a lot from him, not just the business but sales in general. Quickly, I was promoted to a Commercial Booker and the a Commercial Agent to then a full fledged Talent Agent with my own roster of TV/ Film Actors, Music Theatre Performers and taking care of the agency’s Commercial Roster.
The more I learned as both actor and agent, the more I help actors understand what was happening on the other side. What did agent’s look for when looking for submissions? How did Casting respond to someone’s materials or lack of? What strategies did we use to get an actor noticed? And all of this advice I was giving out for free. I was doing it so often and providing so much value that it was actors themselves who started paying me – forcing me to take their money so I could be compensated for not only my time and energy but the knowledge I was providing.
Once it was clear that actors needed to know this information and they were literally giving me money for it, Q&Agent was born as I love answering actors questions, revealing what’s behind the curtain so to speak and seeing them understanding a concept that has confused them for so long is always so rewarding. Years later, we’re still doing a number of consults a month, helping actors land representation, understand the industry and booking work.
During the pandemic, just like most agencies, the agency I was at had to downsize and so Sean Michael Management was born. With a fresh, young roster, with hungry actors and performers, we booked out first credit which was a US Network Series Recurring role 3 weeks after opening which only set our trajectory to fly.
4 years later, we have clients working around the world on TV, Film, Musicals, Cruise Ships, Theme Parks, Commercials and School Tours and it’s really exciting to see them achieve their dreams!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Every business owner knows the biggest obstacle is mindset. There are so many days where you want to give up, when you think you’re not good enough or you question your product or how you market and sell it. But you gotta take it moment by moment and know that what you are doing is improving people’s lives and helping them achieve their dreams so going back to your why really helps.
Asking for help is also essential. If you ask, there are a lot of people who are willing to help – all you have to do is ask. It’s scary to do but when you ask for help, you are learning from the more experienced and as the saying goes, “many hands make light work” and having that extra pair of eyes, ears and a brain and bouncing ideas off of them really does help you think of things or see other perspectives you didn’t consider before.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a creative, I’ve always got a number of projects going whether thats creating films to auditioning for musicals to practising self tapes.
I have a love for comedy, especially sitcom, as I love making people laugh, using my musical skills to create comedic moments as well as story telling. So far I am an award winning writer and producer having created 1 webseries, 2 microfilms which were all multi-award winning projects and 1 short film which is yet to be released.
As an actor, I’ve appeared in projects seen around the world on Netflix, Amazon Prime and a number of Australian networks. The most recent is She Loves Me Not, directed by Tam Sainsbury, produced by Fraser Coast Films which premiered at the Gold Coast Film Festival to a full house and screened at Cannes. I played Rhiannon Fish’s character’s Best Friend and had so much fun doing it! The next project I am waiting to be released is Nautilus, produced by Disney which will be released on AMC sometime in 2024. Which again, was another amazing experience, especially as it was filmed so close to the covid years.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I was just thinking about this today actually. We all take small calculated risks. Something as simple as crossing the road is a small, calculated risk. We have to take them. Oftentimes, fear will stop us to protect us but if we don’t feel the fear and do it anyway, then we will never move forward in life. We won’t grow. We’ll stay in the same place and wonder why we feel stuck. It’s all about getting out of the comfort zone so we can expand our level of comfort. Really leaning into the fear, knowing that there isn’t any physical danger or threat to us, moving forward through it and getting to the other end to get that well deserved reward!
