Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra & Sherry Brown
Sierra & Sherry, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
One day during Covid in spring of 2021 we were out on the water in West Falmouth Harbor located on Cape Cod. I was thinking, ‘I can imagine an ice cream [truck] song playing and coming around the corner,’ and I thought we must have an ice cream boat.
With the help of my business partner and mother-in-law, Sherry Brown, that is exactly what we did. We turned the family boat into an ice cream boat.
Sea Scoops Boat.
At the beginning of June, 2021 Sea Scoops set sail and made a big splash in West Falmouth Harbor, going around selling ice cream to customers who have never seen anything quite like this before.
Customers love it! There’s this woman who lives on Chappy Island and said she’s been coming here for 77 years and this has never crossed her mind. She’s bought an ice cream from us every weekend the last 3 seasons. We are headed into our 4th season.
Sea Scoops operates on the weekends as both Sherry and I both work full-time jobs in healthcare during the week. We are on the water in West Falmouth Harbor 1-4pm on Saturdays starting 6/15/24 and Sundays on the water at Bassetts Island 1-5pm in Bourne.
We were motivated to start Sea Scoops during Covid to bring more
Joy to everyone during such a difficult time, be out on the water more and most importantly to have fun!
Plenty of individuals have helped with the creation and upkeep, including Jeb Brown, a boat mechanic and Sherry’s husband; Sierra’s husband, Tyler Brown and William Brown Sherrys son and Sierra’s brother-in-law.
Sea Scoops receives its ice cream from a local homemade ice
Cream shop named Whistle Stop ice cream. We also take pride in being an eco-friendly, no-footprint business. The cups the ice cream is served in are biodegradable and we don’t serve anything plastic! We use wooden spoons instead, and serve canned water.
In total, Sea Scoops offers 13 total flavors: 10 flavors of ice cream, one Mango sorbet, one No Sugar Vanilla Brownie, and a Vegan Black Raspberry Oreo. We also offer one additional flavor, but it is not for humans. Sea Scoops also sells “pup cups”—a vanilla ice cream with a mini milk bone treat it’s specially made with no dairy.
Fast forward to today June 2024 we now have an ice cream trailer and truck! For land events. We serve anything from birthday parties, graduations, weddings and employee appreciation events! Any type of celebration. We now offer a full topping bar for any events who would like this added package by boat or truck. Our topping bar includes: Hot fudge, caramel sauce, raspberry sauce, whip cream, chocolate Jimmie’s, rainbow sprinkles and cherries. We also offer a complimentary custom menu and labels for the sides of their guests cups that can say anything they’d like for example: Happy Birthday Jimmy!
We have amazing news!! We were selected by TopTrumpsUSA this season. We are on the Cape Cod Monopoly board game! We have a square on the board with an image of our ice cream boat! It’s so awesome and we are so grateful and excited about this opportunity! We are selling the Monopoly games on our website !
We are so proud of our small growing family business! We love offering homemade ice cream catering by sea (boat) and by land (truck) we can’t wait to see where it all takes us! We have a very busy fun filled summer ahead! 🍨🚤
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a constant learning curve ! It has been trial and error since day one. We had to just go for it ! We have learned exactly how to keep our ice cream cold, and how to keep this operation running smoothly. It’s a challenge since we have grown with more vehicles and more events! We love what we do and know hard work pays off. Some struggles include managing our very busy schedules, keeping up with scooping ice cream and learning how to drive our new truck. Like any business there’s always new challenges to face! Luckily everyone loves ice cream the best part of our business is everyone is happy! No one complains and we are helping make memories for hundreds of people and families every season! Sweet memories they will never forget!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
After high school back in 2010 I went to New England School of Art and Design in Boston. I’ve always been a lover of art and am very creative. I met our now graphic designer Georgia Barrett who helped design our Sea Scoops logo in art school! I feel my creative ideas have really helped keep us unique and offer something no one else does!
I also graduated from Cape Cod Community College in 2015 with a degree in Hospitality Management. I worked in hotels and restaurants since I was 12 (under the table) and learned soo much about serving customers and customer service. I have always enjoyed serving people and making others smile!
Sherry and I both work for Cape Cod Health Care. I’m a full time Medical Assistant in a busy primary care office and she is a lead medical records specialist at Cape Cod Hospital. Working in health care requires patience, empathy, and love for people.
I love how all my passions have come together over the years and I’m able to check all the boxes when working Sea Scoops. It truly brings so much joy and meaning to our lives. If you love what you do… you never work a day in your life :)
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
