We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marcus Aguilar. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marcus below.
Alright, Marcus thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
For the longest time I was trying to make a name, brand, and/or staple for myself. It definitely did not come easy. Coming from the valley, doing something like creative work wasn’t something that was realistic to most people. Usually coming from the valley, the goal is to make it to college, graduate, and get a full time normal job. However, i knew that wasn’t going to be the case for me. I knew the Lord had very different plans for me! I moved to Dallas in 2021 and while i was there i was able to build a name for myself in creative working with churches such as UPPERROOM, fellowship church, Christ for the Nations Institute, lifestyle Christianity, working with big name preachers such as Manny Arango, Todd White, etc. however, getting to be able to work with these amazing preachers and ministries, it was really hard to get there! I found myself filming anything and anyone for free to help build my resume! And it was all worth it! Once i built my resume, i was able to have something tangible to give to clients to check out my work and get hired in various places and projects! Now I’m working and traveling filming and doing what i love with amazing people and ministries.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Marcus Aguilar born and raised in the valley. I grew up Christian but never had a relationship with the lord until my 9th grade year in high school. I knew the Lord had different plans for me career wise, i just didn’t know what it was going to look like. I attended Christ for the nations in Dallas to. My family was having a hard time adjusting to me going to Dallas for bible college rather than a normal university but they eventually came around and now they’re my biggest supporters. Being there in Dallas i grew so much in creative. I think Dallas has a special influence on creatives that impacted me greatly. There i was able to network and connect with amazing ministries and people and because of that i now work in Houston and travel for work! I do anything from filming for church’s, festivals, live recordings, and shows!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Thinking that i know everything there is to know about creative! I have had to learn to be humble and remain teachable. There is always someone out there that is better than you in anything. It’s always better to be like a sponge and want to learn more about your craft rather than just stagnant and remain where you are. That’s what i love being a creative because it’s always evolving which means there is literally always something to be learning which keeps me inspired and busy. There have definitely been times early in my career where i thought i knew it all and it costed me gigs, and opportunities. Remain a sponge!

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I have two books! First one being “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry” by John Mark Comer and “The Creative Act” by Rick Ruben. “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry” has taught me so much how important it is to just slow down. As a creative and one who travels for work, it’s often hard for me to “catch a break”. There is such a demand on creatives and videographers right now which is great but it can spread us “creatives” too thin sometimes! This book has taught me how to remain still BIBLICALLY and taught me how to actually put that to practice in my day-to-day life. The Creative Act” was such an amazing book! It teaches you how to put your creativity and ideas into practice and just inspired me so much.
