We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nikki Finn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nikki below.
Nikki, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
This is something that Davis and I like to share with people all the time, actually. Setting up context a touch does help so bear with me here –
When Davis and I first started working together, we would make themed Spotify playlists constantly. They usually were a combination of quick resources for us to use or reference for potential projects, or just songs we would be generally enjoying at the time. There were dozens.
So one day I was adding songs to a playlist and noticed a lot of songs kept saying ‘Reprise’ at the end of them. I knew what this was just from growing up as theater fans – but for those who don’t know – a ‘reprise’ of a song is an updated or changed version of an original song that usually shares similar themes or melodies. They can be used to evoke a difference in something – like a character’s state of mind or journey. Even though the song itself is different, it was still based on an original idea – and it usually is either stronger or evolved. It has changed. It has matured. It was edited. I remember thinking how that would be a perfect name for a post-production company because a Reprise is how Davis and I edit. We take ideas and stories and change them to be something different to evoke something, we hope to be, stronger, all while respecting its foundations. We never want to mask or erase someone’s ideas, we just want to make them stronger. And us both being equally obsessed with music and we do films, it felt like a perfect name for us.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We’re Nikki Finn and Davis Nixon – co-founders of Reprise Post! We’re a post-production boutique based out of Detroit, Michigan. We’re best friends first, film editors second, and business owners third. We edit everything from commercials, documentaries, films, music videos, and everything in between. We offer all things Post Production – including offline & online editing, color-correction, music composition, sound design/audio mix, and animation/VFX. We pride ourselves in being a two-headed creative monster when it comes to every project we touch, and having two different perspectives allows us to push boundaries when it comes to editing. We describe our style as emotional and experimental – all while staying true to our core philosophy: “authenticity over everything”. That’s the good stuff.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Our origin story is also a question I love answering. Back in 2016, I was freelancing for about 6 months and wanted to find a role a little more stable. One day I answered an email looking to interview for a full-time editing position at a smaller ad agency/production company in Detroit. I had a few phone calls and then I was asked to come in and meet the team for an in-person interview. I walk out on this balcony and see about 15 dudes sitting in a circle and I b-line to sit in between two of them, and the person on my right just happened to be the person I would one day call my best friend and business partner, Davis. It was funny though, because after that interview I remember thinking he played the most hard-ball with the questions. He asked difficult questions while the other team members tried more so to get to know me – but he was looking for a serious creative who was just as passionate as him. I think it’s safe to say he found that within me, since he was the main reason I got the call to join him as a co-editor on his team.
Over the next 5 years at the agency, we found ourselves bonding over our similar love for music, film, art, and philosophy. We organically developed this friendship that turned us into family, and I am forever grateful to have found that closeness in a business partner.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
This is a question that Davis and I always tend to subconsciously think about when we reflect on our gratitude. There are many things we are grateful for as successful business owners – but it’s infinitely even better when the reason why we are successful is because of our creativity. I’m sure there are other factors as well, of course, but being creatives is the foundation upon which we build everything. Being able to do what we love everyday while fulfilling our creative aspirations is truly something we never take for granted. And through these specific passions, we are able to tell stories of those who really deserve it. At Reprise, we tell stories that matter and make an impact. Whether we’re uplifting unsung heroes through documentary film or creating commercials around brands built with community in mind, we aim to tell fully-realized narratives at their fullest potential. We see film as the most effective tool for generating impact, and seek to use film as a platform to uplift real narratives of everyday people who do extraordinary things. It is, to put it simply, incredibly rewarding.
