We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alex S. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alex below.
Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I picked up the craft of djing through my uncle at the age of 13. With time and practice, I started getting better and creative leading me to work on my very first events. After being exposed to the scene at a young age, I knew that this was something I wanted to pursue full time but I did not know how. One horrible experience at one event forced me to stay away for almost 6 years. During that time without realizing it, I was being influenced by my closest friends when they would have me in charge of the music for their family gatherings until I finally broke out of my shell in 2012. With the encouragement of my friends and family, I started working more events through a close group of DJ friends and working for Fullpound records allowing me to gain experience in the industry. This also allowed me to make more mixes and to collaborate with other DJs and artists for the next few years. While I was attending Florida International University in 2017, I was invited to join an exclusive honors society called the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS). Throughout my time with the society, I pursued an online business shopping store to bring awareness and support to the DJ community. After a few months, I failed to network with DJs and I was very disappointed with the results. It was not until 2019 I discovered a podcast that would change my life forever in my DJ career. A podcast based out of San Diego, California called The Pan Dulce Life hosted by DJ Refresh would inspire me to create my own podcast called Elcalordemiami that would allow me to network with others and help me create amazing relationships with other DJs. At this moment I definitely knew that I wanted to DJ professionally full time and to always give it 110%.
Alex, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
At the age of 13 I was able to build my creativity by learning the fundamentals of scratching and mixing in order to provide an artistic sound that would be very nice and clean for all audiences to hear. This was through the help of my uncle who was also a dj. I professionally got into the industry in 2012 after learning how to run a business through an unforgettable experience that taught me hard lessons that would only further develop my skills. I apply all those lessons into my entertainment business in order to provide the most reliable and the most entertaining services to my clients. When it comes to the music, I can provide many solutions for different occasions such as weddings, anniversaries, birthday parties, venues such as bars and clubs, and etc. I will also educate the clients on the industry in order to help them make the best decision for their events. This is why I provide consultations as many times to ensure my clients of the services I bring to their events. My punctuality always stands out the most as I am always early to all the events.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
There are many things society can do to support the creative industry of artists, creatives, and the ecosystem. People can start by finding their passion and then network with the artists who are in it. This will make it so much easier to relate and break the ice. Most of us have access to social media so society can start following them and show them support by liking and if possible participating in their events. The best key of advice is to find ways of helping them in any aspect of the industry. This is something every creative will remember for their rest of their lives.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a DJ is to be able to create amazing relationships with other DJs to inspire each other to become better. This also includes providing opportunities to help them showcase their talents with my podcast called Elcalordemiami, recommend them to my other connections for further exposure, and to share my music and experiences. This is the reason why I was able to participate in some of the exclusive guest mixes such as the feature with Rebota on Pitbull’s Globalization on siriusxm radio, Salt Lake City’s most popular latin radio station Latino 106.3 on RitmolatinoX, the PanConQueso Mixshow based out of Sydney, Australia, and to be on the most elite group of latin DJs from all over the world called the Latinmixmasters. The DJ community is all about helping each other grow in order to learn and succeed professionally.
