Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jazmia Battle. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jazmia, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I first knew i wanted to pursue the creative, artistic path when I graduated from North Atlanta High School with a degree in Performing Arts. i also knew when i enrolled into a musical theater class in middle school. I completely fell in love with the arts during my tenure at both schools.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into the industry after I graduated from North Atlanta High School, and decided to pursue my passion for the arts professionally. That path would eventually lead me to perform with Beyonce on Oprahs Surprise Spectacular and the Billboard Awards where Beyonce was honored as ” Woman of the Millenium, Debbie Allen’s ” Brothers of the Knight”, Tyler Perry’s ” For Colored Girls”, A Cinderella Story: Once Upon A Song, Disney in France, Alexis Jordan video ” Hush, Hush”, Big Momma’s House 3 as diva # 1 alongside Martin Lawrence, Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theater’s ” Black Nativity”, Joseph Jones Funeral Home Where Anything Can Go Wrong as ” Kendall Michelle”, Cheezecake Boiz and The Diva, and Dames AFlame Burlesque Troupe as ” Josephine Baker” and ” Lil Miss Egypt”. I graduated from Georgia State University Perimeter College with an Associates of Arts degree in Journalism. I have a women empowerment lifestyle blog called moodsofaphrodite.blogspot.com that is dedicated to helping women discover their inner Goddess. I think what sets me apart is the bevy of experiences I have in the entertainment industry as well as the broad subject content on my blog.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is contributing to the healing of other people through the arts, and also inspiring other creatives to make their dreams come true despite the obstacles and adversities in their path.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I was having a difficult time finding representation and an agent to help me book jobs and build my resume, and I felt like no one understood my vision. i read Alicia Keys book “More Myself”, and Alicia, who is also an Aquarius like myself mentioned having a talk with Oprah Winfrey, another Aquarian, and she said Oprah told her that if we have a vision for ourselves it is our responsibility to bring it to fruition. That lesson and that book taught me that i have all the resources I need, as well as the vision, to make all of my dreams come true. It taught me to stop giving my power away.
