We recently connected with Andrew Allen and have shared our conversation below.
Andrew, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The past few years have been dedicated to a film called ‘The Harvester’, a labor of love created by myself (director), Gavin Bradley (director), Garrett Recker (producer), and Reed Stephenson (production designer). This post apocalyptic project started as a proof of concept inspired by the existential dread brought on by Covid, local wildfires, and the growing sense of unrest concerning the future. Gavin, Reed, and I met years ago and bonded over a shared passion for visual arts. Over the course of the next decade, we developed our LLC Surreptitious Productions. The company came from Gavin and Reed’s collaborations stretching back to childhood which now acts as a brand for the entirety of our evolving work together. One could argue that everything we’ve done together so far has been leading to this project, a film that’s culminated from all of our relationships with fellow filmmakers, friends, and family over the last three years. Our intention with ‘The Harvester’ is to use it as a proof of concept for our first feature film; a way to make our mark in the industry and turn our passions into a career.

Andrew, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Where all of us align is an agreement on taste and intention. There is a level of cohesion that I think everyone recognizes subconsciously when you’re watching a great film. It’s that sense of air-tight construction where the things that jump out at you only serve to immerse you and make you forget you’re sitting on a couch or in a theater. All of us recognize that experience when a film can hit that hard and we strive for that visceral quality in our own work.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think that creativity is a vital part of any discipline. Encouraging people to embrace their inner creativity allows them to express themselves in all walks of life. In the long run, it gives them a healthy outlet to be honest, flawed, and empathetic people.
