We recently connected with Cristian Ramirez and have shared our conversation below.
Cristian, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
The first time I earned a dollar through a creative medium was on a drone project. I purchased a drone first as a hobby – specifically to create a drone video of my hometown of Bakersfield, CA. I uploaded the video online, and was contacted by several members of the community for small drone projects. The first of those, was a drone video of a local church. It made me realize how much potential there is to earn an income off creativity. The payment I received was small since I did not know how to price my work, but that did not matter. I was extremely happy that someone wanted to pay me to create.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My main thing is cinematography and to a lesser extent, photography. I create short films on YouTube that have gained the attention of larger YouTube channels who have reached out to me personally via Instagram or email to collaborate on projects together. I have always been someone who has shown an interest and a passion for cameras from a very young age as far as I can remember. People contact me for photography or videography. I shoot all my videos with the Sony FX3, and most recently the majority of the pictures I take have been shot on the Pentax 67 – though I do sometimes shoot with the Sony a7r III. I think something that sets me apart from others is I do really aim for a cinematic feel on both photo and video. I shoot shorts that look like they were pulled from a large budget motion picture film. I shoot photos that look like they were pulled out of a movie. I am very proud of how far I have come in such a short time period and how much I learn and grow everyday. I want people to know that I am just a creative like them, that I really put in all my mind into this.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect for me, is being able to put all your ideas together in beautiful ways that display your mind. For example, I have a silent short on YouTube of my friend and his daughter. I simply wanted to show what I find beautiful about the relationship between a father and a daughter from an outsider’s perspective since I have no children of my own. I love being able to take portraits of someone, and see the look on their faces when I see them enjoy how they look in a photo.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think that all creativity stems from the imagination of children. With that said, I believe the best way to support artists and creatives is to support them while they are young. I think more could be done in the public education system to encourage creativity among elementary school age children. Some children never reach their full creative potential simply because of the lack of support.
