We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Crux Conception, M. Psych a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Crux thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
After retiring from law enforcement, I found myself at a crossroads, unsure of the path ahead. The transition was challenging, as the structured and demanding world of law enforcement had defined my identity for years. As I navigated this uncertain period, an unexpected opportunity arose—an invitation to speak on a stage in Budapest. It was a pivotal moment that reignited my passion for public speaking, but it also set the stage for something even bigger: my defining moment at a TEDx event.
For a speaker, TEDx is akin to the Apollo Theater—an iconic platform where you either make it or you don’t. The pressure was immense, and I knew this was a chance to solidify my new direction. To prepare, I dedicated myself fully to the task. I practiced hypnosis, a technique I had honed over time, to calm my nerves and ensure I could speak clearly, avoid stuttering, and control my pacing. I also studied the greats—Jay Z and Dave Chappelle—observing how they interacted with their audiences and moved across the stage with effortless confidence.
For two months, I rehearsed tirelessly, almost eight hours a day. I visualized every moment, every word, every step. The goal was to deliver a speech and create an experience. When the day finally came, all the preparation paid off. I offered one of the best speeches of my life, combining style, substance, and a connection with the audience that I had worked so hard to perfect.
That TEDx talk was more than just a speech; it was a turning point. It validated my decision to embrace a new path and set the stage for the next chapter of my life, where I would continue to speak, teach, and inspire others with the lessons I had learned throughout my journey.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
In 2016, I was deeply affected by PTSD, which disrupted every part of my life and left me feeling disconnected. After traditional therapies failed, I decided to take control of my healing by embarking on a seven-year journey across 34 countries. This journey wasn’t just about travel—it was about understanding human interaction and the complexities of the human condition. Along the way, I studied various forms of communication, body language, and emotional intelligence, ultimately developing a method that transforms distressing behavior into empathetic and harmonious interactions. Today, I’m proud to share that this method has not only helped me reclaim my life but is also offering hope to others facing similar struggles.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My reputation in the market has been built on a foundation of relentless dedication to understanding the unique needs of my clients and delivering solutions that exceed their expectations. Traveling across 34 countries and engaging with diverse cultures has equipped me with a deep understanding of human interaction and emotional intelligence. This global perspective, combined with my commitment to developing innovative methods for fostering empathetic connections, has set me apart in my field. Additionally, my candor about my mental health struggles and victories has been a pivotal aspect of my journey. By being open about my experiences with PTSD and the path to overcoming it, I’ve not only fostered deeper connections with my clients but also created a safe space for others to discuss and address their mental health challenges. This openness has allowed me to offer something truly valuable—methods that not only address but transform the challenges faced by my clients.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Beyond training and knowledge, empathy, resilience, and strong people skills have been the most crucial factors in my success. My experiences traveling the world—having visited over 34 countries and circled the globe four times—have allowed me to develop an exceptional ability to connect with people from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and religions. This fluency in communication, coupled with a deep sense of empathy, enables me to understand and connect with others on a profound level. It’s these people skills that truly drive my work, allowing me to create meaningful, lasting changes for those I serve. Resilience, on the other hand, has allowed me to persist in the face of setbacks, continually refining my approach until I found methods that truly make a difference. Together, these qualities enable me to not only succeed but also to inspire and uplift others in my field.
