We were lucky to catch up with Sharonda Goodman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sharonda, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I received my first client when I decided to do my own hair. I learned about the power of social media, content and digital marketing at a very young age. I remember wanting to promote my hair on Instagram so I went in the bathroom and spent hours perfecting it! I posted on Instagram for the first time when I began my hair page. A client saw my post and reached out to me asking if she could have her hair done. I was so happy and overjoyed. I posted her on Instagram and even more clients reached out to me! Utilizing social media to get more customers is my best strategy for beginners in business.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Sharonda Denise Goodman and I’m from Newport News, Virginia. I’m 20 years old and I graduated cosmetology school in 2023. My hair studio is located in Newport News , Va and I’m self employed.
My parents are both entrepreneurs and seeing them chase their dreams inspired me to chase my own! I’ve always loved doing hair on my doll babies and siblings. I started taking the beauty industry seriously when I started working for myself in high school at the age of 17. I knew college wasn’t the route I wanted to go at 18 so I decided to go to cosmetology school.
After I graduated from cosmetology at 19 years old and started working at a salon that wasn’t the best fit for me. The thing that I was passionate about felt like a job. I was trying to fit in an environment that didn’t support my skill set or my ethnic background. The salon eventually fired me and a burden lifted off my shoulders. That’s when God spoke to me and I started my first LLC. He told me to name it “ The Anointed Touch”. I specialize in extensions, natural hair and special occasion styles.
I was blessed to work alongside my mother within her business and rent out her office space. I completely renovated the space and made it into a hair studio.
A lot of my clients live busy lives so I wanted to invite them in a space that felt like home away from home. I want to make the lives of my clients easier when they wake up! A lot of woman don’t like spending a lot of time on their hair in the morning. I curated services that allow for them to regain their confidence back and cut down their hair routine time in the morning!
What makes me different from other stylist in my area is my attention to detail and true care for my clients hair. A great hair experience that doesn’t end when they leave but starts! A model designed to keep them coming back for more.
I’m proud of the time and effort I’ve put into making my dreams come true! Knowing that I’m in my area and I help woman feel beautiful is what keeps me going. Building long lasting relationships with my clients helps both of us excel and grow!
The entrepreneur journey is ever growing and changing! I’m happy to be apart of this journey and having faith in God to carry me along the way. Knowing that he’s my providers, source and where all good things flow from.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’ve built my audience on social media through consistency and posting quality content. Utilizing social media as a tool has helped me build an amazing community online and offline. It takes time, effort and dedication to reaching new people. Building your social media presence is definitely an art and acquired skill. It takes time, knowledge and investing in yourself. Start by posting quality and informative content online. Don’t let the views get in the way. Consistency is key.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was the fact that I didn’t think I needed anyone to be successful. I thought that all I needed was myself. I quickly unlearned that negative way of thinking. I didn’t get to where I am today without the help of others. Whether it was a stranger, friend or teachers. There’s value in community and connections with other people. Some people have the skill set to get the task done better than you possibly can. Leaning on other people isn’t a weakness but a strength. To be humble and know that you don’t always have the answers. But there’s someone who does and can get the job done better than you can!
