Today we’d like to introduce you to Edú Newbon
Hi Edú, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey started in the world of audio engineering and producing. Five years with Sony gave me loads of experience, but the deeper I dove into producing, the more I felt disconnected from reality. Found myself knee-deep in creating an album that got a Grammy nomiation, but I was still living paycheck to paycheck, and extremely unhappy. Something had to give. So, I ditched the producing gig for a 9-5 to pay the bills and get my life back on track.
But, as the saying goes, old habits have a stubborn grip. And so amidst the chaos, I found solace in writing poetry and painting. Teamed up with this astounding artist from Turkey, Ezgi Karata, and we published the book entitled ‘SOARH’, Songs Of A Ravished Heart”.
Then, out of the blue, a curator spotted my art and asked if I’d be up for showing it in his gallery. And that’s when it all changed. My first sale, man, it was like laying the first brick of success. From there, it’s been a whirlwind – art shown and collected in Nicaragua, Paris, Vancouver, Puerto Rico, just to name a few. And get this, all as a fresh-faced artist. So I was extremely blessed stepping out into the visual arts world.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Sure, there were some real lows along the way. Like, eating nothing but Gallo Pinto (Name of a Nicaraguan dish of beans and rice) everyday just to survive. But, hey, I pushed through. And I persevered. Now, I’m in a better place, creating art out of passion, not just necessity. And the most fulfilling aspect? The profound connections I’ve forged with my collectors, as if we’re all traversing this path together.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
For this question I’d like to share a write up of myself by a world-renowned Artist/Writer Jairo Dealba.
Resilience Unveiled: The Artistic Chronicles of Edú
In the vibrant tapestry of Chicago’s art scene, one name resonates with a profound narrative of resilience and cultural identity: Edu. A Latino artist whose brushstrokes echo the ancestral whispers of Africa, Edu transcends mere canvas and paint, delving deep into the soul of his heritage to create a visual symphony of neo-expressionism.
His art is not just a reflection of the past, nor a mere commentary on the present; it is a bold proclamation of the future, painted with strokes of defiance against life’s absurdities and complexities. Through his work, Edu speaks a language born out of necessity – the need to create, to articulate, to exist beyond the confines of silence.
Each piece is a testament to the endurance of his ancestors, whose voices still reverberate in the corridors of time. With every stroke, Edu channels the collective scream of Latin resilience, a cry against the oppressors of history, a declaration of freedom in the face of colonization.
His canvases become battlegrounds where colors clash and merge, where forms dance in a chaotic harmony, mirroring the tumultuous journey of his people. Yet amidst the chaos, there is an undeniable sense of purpose, a relentless pursuit of expression that transcends borders and ideologies.
Edu’s art is a testament to the power of creativity as both a lifeline and a weapon. It feeds not only his existence but his insatiable obsession to speak louder, to be heard above the cacophony of indifference. In each stroke, he defies the erasure of his culture, reclaiming space and identity with unapologetic fervor.
Through Edu’s eyes, we witness the resilience of a people who refuse to be silenced, whose stories are woven into the fabric of every brushstroke. His art is a beacon of hope, a reminder that the struggle for freedom is ongoing, but so too is the power of expression to transcend barriers and unite hearts.
In a world marred by division and strife, Edu’s art serves as a potent reminder of our shared humanity, of the strength that lies within diversity, and the beauty that emerges from the ashes of oppression. It is a call to arms, a rallying cry for solidarity, and above all, a celebration of the indomitable spirit of the human soul.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The most vital quality fueling my success is a blend of being personable, mildly aggressive, and having a fire within. This concoction ignites resilience in me, propelling me forward through challenges with a relentless drive, while still maintaining a warm and approachable demeanor. Plus, I live by a proverb that influences my everyday life.
“I’d rather be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener in a war”. To a weak man this very proverb would make him uneasy, but for me this is exactly who I am and I stand on it with unwavering discipline.
