Today we’d like to introduce you to Anika Simeth
Hi Anika, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Like with many creatives, the roots of my journey began in early childhood—I have always been “the art kid.” However, my artistic career began only in 2021. I started out by doing commissioned paintings for friends and family, for whose support I am still very grateful today. Alongside that, I worked on personal passion projects. Water in its various forms and shapes has always fascinated me, probably because of its soothing and mesmerizing effect. So, I tried to do paintings from photographs I had taken over time. One year into my career, it clicked—I had done some waterscape paintings that suddenly got a lot of attention, both in person and online. From there, my Instagram account blew up, and people from all over the world were now interested in collecting my work.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest obstacle was definitely my own mind! A mixture of societal beliefs and confidence issues held me back from pursuing my dream of being an artist. It was a long road before I had the courage to decide to give this a try. What helped me was reading about other people’s success stories and developing a growth mindset over time. This means believing that literally everything is a skill that you can learn and develop.
The great thing is, once the decision is made, many things suddenly fall into place. From then on, it’s just a question of the ability to learn, dedication, and time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in oil painting, and most people know me for my sparkling wave- and waterscapes. I often paint water in warm shades with subtle color gradations, trying to create a glowing look. I do paint other subjects to change things up from time to time, but I always find myself coming back to the sunlit waves.
To me, being authentic with my work is crucial. The inspiration for my paintings comes from my own photography, which means my subjects are unique and can’t be found anywhere else. This also creates a strong connection between me, the artwork, and the collector, as I share the stories behind the final product. I think people are interested in seeing the whole creative process. On social media, I can show people the places I have been and how they affect my paintings.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
People who know me as an artist are often surprised to learn that I work as a dietician too! I choose to continue working part-time in this field to support my creative business. This takes the pressure off having to earn a full income from art and gives me the freedom to work on what I want.
