Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Glezelli
Hi Maria, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I was a kid, I dreamed of becoming an artist. I would spend hours crafting all sorts of things with any material I could find. Later, my grandmother taught me how to knit, and that memory has always accompanied me throughout my journey. While studying at the University of Fine Arts, I fell in love with metal. Initially, I worked with larger pieces such as objects and theatrical costumes, and gradually, I started working on a smaller scale. I was fascinated by the intricacy a metal wire can create and decided to make jewelry. This is how Maria Glezelli Jewellery started. I built my own business from scratch, and I couldn’t be more proud.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. When you start a business, there are countless things you need to learn and consider. From logistics to production and marketing, each aspect demands attention and time. Wearing different hats every day is part of the business and can be quite challenging.
One of the biggest struggles was sourcing the materials I needed. I spent countless hours researching suppliers and experimenting with different metals. Moving to different countries added another layer of difficulty, as I had to research new workshops and suppliers each time.
Moreover, when you start a business, it takes time to generate sales. Patience and persistence are essential to staying in the game longer.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have been using an ancient knitting technique to construct my jewellery pieces. Each piece is made out of a single line of sterling silver wire without the use of any mass manufacturing machinery. It is a very time consuming process that requires a lot of patience, attention to detail and precision but the result is so unique. One of the main reasons I decided to continue and evolve this technique is my desire to preserve ancient traditions. Every time I knit, I remember my grandmother and that connection makes me feel closer to my roots.
What sets me apart is my desire to inspire women and encourage them to always be proud of their origins. I want them to always remember where they come from and carry a memory of their heritage by wearing pieces that remind them the woven handicrafts of their ancestors.
The thing I am most proud of is the journey itself—starting from my childhood dreams of being an artist to building a thriving business on my own. Overcoming the challenges and growing my brand while staying true to my vision has been incredibly rewarding.
