Cash, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
It’s hard to pick just one, but the style of tattooing I do (photo realism, black & grey, and portraits) lends itself to a lot of very meaningful tattoos. I’ve done many memorial pieces and sentimental tattoos, and I am always honored when someone chooses me to turn one of their loved ones or an important memory into a permanent part of their body in the form of a portrait tattoo or other realism tattoo. I personally think black and grey tattoos give the most emotion as they are evocative of older black and white movies as well as the fact that black and grey tattoos seem to stand the test of time better, often looking even better over the years as the tones soften up.

Cash, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I had the opportunity to start a tattoo apprenticeship right out of high school (technically while still in high school). I had been drawing tattoos for my friends and the owner of the shop they were going to was curious where they were getting these drawings. It was a super lucky break for me as he happened to be looking for an apprentice, and the timing just worked out perfectly. Luckily we hit it off quickly as I later learned that apprenticeships are very hard to come by. Learning how to tattoo in my own hometown wound up paying off more than I could’ve known. Over the years I have worked in many different styles of tattooing, from American Traditional to blackwork and dotwork to color tattoos. Growing up, my mom had taught me how to do pencil drawings, so I wound up falling back on that as I have honed my craft to work in black and grey, photorealism tattoos. Along with portraits and other forms of realism, I also tattoo Traditional Japanese style tattooing. At my shop, Chapter One Tattoo, we have an artist for any style one can think of which allows me to hone my craft further in the photorealistic style I enjoy most. What sets me apart from others is I realized so many other tattooers focused too much on their portfolios and would sometimes forget about the client. I’ve even found myself talking clients out of certain tattoos as my experience allows me to offer insight into what will make the best tattoo. I feel having personal integrity and not just taking on a project for the money has given me a reputation for quality where the client comes first. I feel this relationship with clients is much more valuable and many times leads to clients who come back again and again.

: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
There are two things that I attribute to driving me, being a husband and parent. I am a family man with a beautiful wife and two beautiful boys, and they are my motivation to work hard and provide for them. Raising kids has made me more sentimental, and it has changed my eye creatively. By being a family man it has given me a new perspective and outlook in all aspects of my life, which includes my art and tattoos. Being a parent really reminds me how fleeting life is, and being able to capture certain moments and memories in the form of a tattoo puts me in a unique position, In a way it has given my tattoos something special that makes the viewer feel something, which all great art should do.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To me, the most rewarding aspect of being a tattooer is when the client sees their tattoo finished and you can see the emotion on their face (even behind the mask). Knowing I have created a permanent memory, whether it is a portrait of a loved one or a scene or picture of a certain memory, and seeing the joy in the clients face, there’s really nothing better.
