Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Daw
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was a young girl, I was completely uninterested in the things my friends were playing with – Dolls, Barbie’s, and all the stereotypical little girls things. You could find me climbing a tree in my parent’s backyard, playing football with the boys, and taking an active interest in nature. Somewhere along the way, my parents got me a 110mm Barbie camera, maybe in hopes to get me to be a little less of a tomboy. I never picked up a Barbie, but that camera did change the trajectory of my life. I spent my teenage years photographing my younger siblings, setting them up with installments I would make in my bedroom, and asking them to pose in a variety of ways. I slowly learned more and more about light, working with people, and really picked up photography as a hobby. It wasn’t until I moved to Copenhagen, Denmark at 20 years old that I began taking it really seriously after a friend loaned me his (very expensive) equipment. From there, as the story goes, the rest is history. I started photographing portraits, then weddings, and when I moved back home to the US 5 years later, I went full-time. That was 15 years ago and I haven’t ever looked back.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a smooth road, yes…but a windy one. It has not been easy and it’s taken a lot of failing to learn how to do it right. There is the age-old saturation of the market to contend with, industry drama and gossip, constantly feeling like you aren’t as far ahead of where you want to be, and general self doubt. There’s trying to carve your own niche and doing it your own way, even when it doesn’t always make sense. But for me, each of these things has taught me about ingenuity, dedication, and persistence. I wouldn’t have wanted an easy, smooth and straight road on this journey.
We’ve been impressed with Alicia Ann Photographers, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m a fine art wedding photographer who specializes in luxury wedding in New York City & European Destinations. I’ve spent over two decades of my life globetrotting to over 37 countries while developing an effortless style for capturing exquisite and chic affairs. Running a multiple six-figure business while raising two little ones has required me to be very strategic in how I optimize my working hours to bring in more income with fewer hours. Over the last 15+ years in the luxury wedding industry, I’ve honed the strategies that work to attract ideal clients, fully book my calendar, and increase my income level – so while I still photograph weddings, I also have educational opportunities available for creative entrepreneurs and photographers.
What makes you happy?
I feel the happiest when I am on my hammock in the backyard reading to my kids while my chickens cluck around me, and bees buzz around my garden. I feel most alive when I have my feet on European soil, sipping the most delectable hot chocolates or chai lattes (I don’t drink coffee) and eating the most incredible pastries. I feel most settled when I’m in nature, standing high atop a mountain with an overlook after a long hike, or with my bum firmly planted on powder soft sand by the ocean.
For me, happiness boils down to connection, mostly with God, my family, my friends, my colleagues, and this incredible beautiful planet of ours.
