We recently connected with Sabrina Ward and have shared our conversation below.
Sabrina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you ever had an amazing boss, mentor or leader leading you? Can you us a story or anecdote that helps illustrate why this person was such a great leader and the impact they had on you or their team?
In my early 20s, I had a mentor who profoundly shaped how I approach challenges, personally and professionally. At that time, I often called my manager with problems, expecting them to help me find the solutions. Instead, my mentor consistently said, “Call me back with a couple of solutions.” Initially, I thought this was the harshest thing—wasn’t a manager supposed to tell me what to do? But over time, I realized that this approach taught me to be more solution-oriented. It made me think critically about options and what could be done, a skill that has stayed with me throughout my life.
Beyond that, this mentor also taught me the importance of valuing people in any organization. They demonstrated that the best leaders always put people at the forefront, ensuring their needs and potential are central to every decision. This combination of being solution-focused and people-centered has been a guiding principle in my career ever since.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My journey in Human Resources and organizational development has been shaped by over 15 years of experience in the field. Throughout this time, I’ve learned that effective problem-solving and a people-centric approach are key to building strong teams and successful organizations. I’ve always been driven by the idea that HR should go beyond just managing resources—it should be about fostering environments where team members can thrive, grow, and feel engaged.
I offer various HR consulting services, including monthly consulting packages, business assessments and audits, training, and fractional HR support. Additionally, I provide project management support and serve as a subject matter expert for existing teams. This involves helping to support the team by providing strategic insights and offering perspective. I also specialize in training HR professionals, particularly those in small businesses that may require more senior-level support but find it challenging to afford.
My real-life, multi-state experience with teams sets me apart. I’ve learned valuable lessons from successes and mistakes, equipping me with the knowledge and insights to help organizations navigate complex challenges and build strong, resilient teams. I’m most proud of my impact in reshaping the HR narrative, advocating for both team members and employers, and ensuring that people are always at the forefront of every decision.
For potential clients and followers, I want you to know that my work is grounded in a deep commitment to people. Whether helping organizations with compliance, developing strategic initiatives, or providing ongoing support, I always aim to create environments where people can succeed. When team members are genuinely valued and prioritized, the mission, purpose, and procedures naturally align and thrive.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I began my career in operations, which gave me a unique perspective on how organizations function. This experience allowed me to see through the lens of people, understanding their perspectives and how they contribute to the organization’s success. As I advanced, I transitioned into more HR operational roles. I combined my operational knowledge with a focus on organizational development and design, including leading efforts in mergers and acquisitions.
Throughout my career, I’ve had to be agile, wearing various hats beyond HR and operations. This experience taught me how different departments and groups work together, giving me a holistic understanding of organizational dynamics. My journey has ultimately been about people making a difference and impacting organizations. By integrating these experiences, I’ve contributed to creating environments that prioritize people while aligning with the broader organizational goals.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Several resources have significantly shaped my management and entrepreneurial thinking. Books like “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team” by Patrick Lencioni, “Drive” by Daniel H. Pink, “Good to Great” by Jim Collins, “The One Minute Manager” by Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson, and “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey have provided me with valuable insights into leadership, team dynamics, motivation, and personal effectiveness. These books emphasize the importance of trust, accountability, clear goals, and balancing personal and professional priorities.
Certain videos, in addition to books, have also been influential. Simon Sinek’s TED Talk on “Start with Why” shaped my understanding of the importance of knowing and communicating the purpose behind our actions. Brené Brown’s TED Talk on “The Power of Vulnerability” has deepened my appreciation for vulnerability, empathy, and connection in leadership.
Essays such as Peter Drucker’s “Managing Oneself” have helped me understand the importance of self-awareness, personal development, and playing to one’s strengths in management and entrepreneurship.
Collectively, these resources have influenced my philosophy, particularly my recognition of the critical role of people, purpose, and adaptability in leading successful organizations.
