We were lucky to catch up with Jazlyn Figueroa recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jazlyn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I founded Fit U Training to break away from the traditional exercise models that were primarily based on decades of research focused on the male body. Instead of adhering to a one-size-fits-all approach, I prioritize tracking my clients’ hormonal cycles to create personalized workout regimens that align with their body’s unique needs throughout the month. Additionally, I offer hormone-balancing protocols for women at all stages of life. It’s been truly transformative to help women across the country achieve their fitness goals by empowering them to understand and harness their bodies’ natural rhythms, no matter the time of the month.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jazlyn Figueroa and I am the founder of Fit U. Training. This company channels my deep-seeded passion for fitness and wellness into a unique approach that blends science with a holistic understanding of the female body. Recognizing the profound impact of hormonal cycles on women’s fitness, I founded Fit U. Training to offer personalized regimens that honor and harness these natural rhythms.
My journey in fitness began with seven years of playing volleyball, which eventually led to two years of coaching. After high school, I became a certified personal trainer and started working with an in-home personal training company. During this time, I noticed a recurring issue among my female clients: many struggled with weight loss due to factors like PCOS, birth control, and pregnancy/postpartum, all of which are tied to hormonal changes. This prompted me to research how hormones impact fitness levels, revealing a significant gap in research on women’s bodies. I discovered that most fitness data was based on studies conducted exclusively on men. Driven by this realization, I made it my mission to develop a process that tracks clients’ hormonal cycles to create personalized fitness plans that align with their specific hormonal needs. In September 2023, I launched Fit U. Training to bring this mission to life, making it my goal to change the industry standard one client at a time.
Beyond the graphs and data, my Asian heritage deeply shapes my philosophy on holistic wellness, emphasizing the body’s natural ability to heal and thrive when in balance. I’ve developed a comprehensive program that integrates hormone-balancing protocols into workout routines for women at every stage of life. Instead of pushing costly supplements and powders, I focus on weekly check-ins, offering practical, maintenance solutions that heal the body from within while accommodating clients’ busy lifestyles. My goal is to empower women to understand their bodies, leading to sustainable health and wellness.
Fit U Training, based in Austin, Texas, offers both in-person and online coaching, making tailored fitness solutions accessible to women everywhere. My commitment to setting a new standard in the fitness industry is reflected in how I blend traditional knowledge with modern science, creating an environment where women can achieve long-term, functional results.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of clients for me has been through openly discussing the research gaps in the fitness industry to both men and women. By removing the stigma surrounding periods and hormones, I was able to educate a diverse range of people about the intricacies of the female body. Whether at fitness classes, networking events, on social media, or even in casual conversations with friends and family, these discussions sparked curiosity and interest. This open dialogue not only enlightened many but also led to word-of-mouth referrals, as individuals shared my mission to change women’s fitness standards and recommended my services to others.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the notion that pushing my body to its limits, regardless of the circumstances, was the only path to results. Growing up, I was constantly working out, driven by the belief that relentless effort was the key to success. However, I soon realized that at certain points in my menstrual cycle, this approach was counterproductive. Instead of achieving the desired results, I found myself dealing with inflammation and struggling to replace fat with muscle. This experience taught me that respecting my body’s natural rhythms and adjusting my workouts accordingly were crucial for achieving optimal fitness outcomes.
