We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristin Engineer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristin , thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name of my company, MotoGirl Music, came from two things I love most: riding motorcycles and writing dance pop. The idea of creating a company name that combined the energy of riding a motorcycle with the fast tempo of dance pop felt like the perfect pairing. It also turned out to be a great name for encompassing our Creative Artist Consulting services. My motorcycle is a bright red Ducati Monster 620. Riding this beautiful machine and writing dance music are both “in the moment” activities. Every day, this name reminds me that I am living my passion and making the most of each moment.

Kristin , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
MotoGirl Music is a pop production house and artist consultancy business based in Los Angeles. We specialize in creating dance pop, electro-pop, and French pop for TV, film, ads, and promos. The Creative Artist Consultancy division of our business helps creators advance their own work and deepen their understanding of the music industry at all levels. Our customized, one-on-one sessions offer a wide array of services, including project management (artist development), refining music production skills (songwriting, executive production), navigating the business side of music (sync licensing, contracts), and fostering industry connections (networking).
My entry into sync licensing came from exploring options for myself as an artist later in my career. I first learned about sync licensing in 2019 and fully immersed myself in understanding the business in 2020. I was fascinated by the idea of building a business that could support both my artistry and my background in music education. My role at MotoGirl Music encompasses ownership, executive music production, songwriting, toplining, and artist consultancy.
What sets MotoGirl Music apart is that we are a one-stop shop with a deep understanding of the business of clearing music for media. Our global producer teams curate a catalog of radio-ready works and are available for bespoke projects tailored to the needs of advertisers and brands. Our music has been featured in Netflix and HBO Max shows and we’ve secured advertising spots for major brands like Toyota and Target. We have a distinct pop sound, created by myself as a songwriter and enhanced by our global team of producers, all delivered with the exceptional vocal talent of Sophie Gold.
MotoGirl Music is committed to inclusivity, with a particular focus on uplifting underrepresented creators, including women, women-identifying individuals, non-binary people, LGBTQIA+, and BIPOC artists. We are a woman-identifying and LGBTQIA+-owned company. Our producer teams curate a catalog of radio-ready works and offer bespoke projects tailored to advertising and brand needs.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Building a solid reputation in sync licensing comes from connecting with as many people as possible in the industry and demonstrating strong business ethics. I started networking and getting to know music supervisors, editors, and others in the music industry through conferences and online events. MotoGirl Music has strong branding, and the red helmet logo is striking and memorable. My name, Kristin Engineer, is distinctive and easy to remember. We focus on providing radio-ready dance pop, and everyone who works with us knows that MotoGirl Music offers the security of one-stop music licensing, with all songs ready for placement in media. Each song has a contract for all parties involved, and I am advised by my amazing entertainment lawyer, Brooke Ferri, with every business or individual I work with. I built this reputation by attending as many events as possible, making numerous connections in the industry, and consistently delivering music to industry professionals, all backed by sound business practices.

How’d you meet your business partner?
Although I own MotoGirl Music by myself, I have a particularly important colleague and friend to share with you. Aventurina King (Ava King) is a close friend, my primary music producer, and a vocalist who performs under the artist name Sophie Gold. We met through my songwriting coach, Robin Frederick, online in 2020. At the time, I was learning the art of writing pop hooks, and Robin suggested I connect with Ava. I loved the idea of working with a female producer, and the rest is her-story! We created our first track, “Something From Nothing,” which has since been featured in multiple TV shows. From the moment we created that song, I knew this was a perfect match! For over a year, we collaborated online, producing, mixing, and mastering our work, until I moved to LA in 2021. Now, we have multiple placements for brands and shows, and we plan to continue working together for a long time.
