Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Robbie Lathan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Robbie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
To be honest it takes a problem to become successful and solving that problem on a continuous basis to remain successful. For example Ginger & Honey was founded based on a personal problem I had with the current selection of skincare products on the shelves. Not only did they not fix my problematic skin issues but they enflamed them. So I began to take matters in my own hands and experiment with natural plant based ingredients and there was my solution…. or so I thought. It ended up solving the same problems for hundreds of people who were in the same boat I was in.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As the Owner and Founder of Ginger & Honey, my journey into the beauty industry was driven by four key motivations. First, my frustration with the lack of high-quality skincare solutions on the market. Secondly, my experimentation with natural, organic ingredients in my own kitchen. Thirdly, the implementation of those natural products into my daily skincare routine. And last, the desire to offer holistic, natural ingredients to people facing similar everyday skincare concerns. From there, Ginger & Honey was born. What truly sets us apart is our philosophy: our products are not designed to change you, but to enhance your natural beauty and support your personal journey. In a world where the beauty industry pushes conformity, Ginger & Honey celebrates individuality. One of my proudest achievements is being voted Cleveland’s #1 skincare brand for two consecutive years. Our mission is to meet you where you are on your skincare journey and help you get to where you want to be.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I started Ginger & Honey in a small apartment in the South Bronx, NYC. A year later, I became pregnant with my daughter and soon after got engaged, which prompted me to move back to my hometown and essentially restart my business. Six months later, I relocated to Kentucky with my daughter and now ex-fiancé, which again required me to rebuild Ginger & Honey from the ground up. Following a difficult breakup, I returned to Cleveland, Ohio, as a single mother. In just two years, I went from moving place to place, becoming a full-time mom, managing a full-time job, and struggling to keep my business afloat.
During this challenging time, I received an order from an international subscription box for over 21,000 units of our most popular product. Without knowing where I would manufacture these handmade items, how I would meet such a large order, or who would help me, I still said yes. I had to trust in my ability to get it done—and I did. That same year, I launched my first brick-and-mortar store and won the Best of Cleveland for Best Handmade Item, all while juggling a toddler and a full-time job. Through every challenge, I kept reminding myself, ‘I will get this done,’ and from that determination, everything fell into place.

We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
Everything I make is handmade by me with my own formulations. I’ve learned that this is the fun and creative part for me and this is where my genius shines the most. I’ve learned that although I’m trying to build my business and push for more more more the foundation is the creative freedom I have in the kitchen creating the formulations and testing them. As long as I keep this part fun in the future everything else will fall into place. Like the saying goes… love what you do and the success will follow.
