We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mary K. Savarese a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mary K., thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
As a Creative, I am a traditionally published award-winning, bestselling, fiction Author. I author fantasy adventures intertwined with romances and I am known for my quirky titles:
Tigers Love Bubble Baths & Obsession Perfume (who knew!)
The StarWriters Trilogy:
The Girl In The Toile Wallpaper
The StarWriters Club
& on the horizon, Return The Girl In the Toile Wallpaper
Being interviewed on Podcasts and Radio, I often joke about why I write in the genre I do. I answer, “Because reality is too real for me. So I love to write in fantasy. I love to offer my audience an escape from their reality. To sit down, relax and curl up with an easy read. I love to take you on an adventure, a journey away from your every day struggles and to make your life more enjoyable.”
That is my mission to give you an escape from reality by bringing you into fantasy worlds intertwined with romances which is the best!
My other mission is to stress to my audience to never give up. More on that to come!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Entering the third chapter of my life, (first was working on me and my financial career, second was raising my family), I stumbled, I struggled, I had hidden dreams that I didn’t share because they were just that, dreams.
My dream was to become a traditionally published fiction author creating diverse and interesting characters and fantasy adventure filled worlds intertwined with romances.
As the family I raised, adulted, I was left empty. Was my purpose gone? But I still had a lot of life to live and honestly, I struggled. But within that struggle I had a DREAM. An opportunity to discover something new and something wonderful for myself. Something that excited me!
Never let it be said this is not true, “As one door closes another opens.” A theme I stress throughout my StarWriters Trilogy.
For it is written in the stars…
As that ‘family life’ purpose door closed for me what opened was a joy in writing, creating fantasy adventures, a wonderful new beginning and rejection, after rejection, after rejection…
I had to learn how to develop a thick skin, believe in myself, believe in my writing that brought me such joy and helped me through a difficult point in my life.
I say to you, if you have a dream, a fire in your belly and soul to do something, never, ever, give up on yourself. Don’t listen to the naysayers. Head to the heavens with your dream. For it shall come true, you just have to stick with it and believe in yourself.
Mine took ten years, yes ten years! With every rejection i just kept writing and creating because it gave me joy. Manuscript after manuscript, finally, and it only takes one person to believe in you. And here I am on my 4th traditionally published fiction novel.
So never, ever, give up on yourself. The journey will be fantastic. I promise.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As I mentioned. I had a dream to become a traditionally published fiction author. Crushed time after time, but I loved what I was doing and didn’t want to give up. I always had hope and after ten years it finally came true, a contract with a small publishing house. Someone believed in me!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I had to relearn as I state never give up on yourself is one where I had to reach out for professional help with my struggles with anxiety. We wear many hats and think we can handle it all. The truth is there is wonderful help out there and don’t fear.
I learned how to deal with my issue, through positive reinforcement and eventually was able to not rely on medication that helped me initially.
Anxiety never goes away but with the right life tools, I am grateful I crossed that life bridge. I am on the other side, hopefully able to help others with my experience.
