We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful True Dream Juan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with True Dream below.
Hi True Dream, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My mom working at the #1 radio station in our city showed me that I’m able to put myself here if I work hard towards it. My nana “Mary” being an English teacher gave me that structure and discipline by making me read and write down every word in the Dictionary and Thesaurus a few times. My mom showed me how to put choruses and lyrics together to make a rhyme scheme. I remember the song like it was yesterday. They both have passed away now and one of my only goals now is to show them both that their work wasn’t done in vain. Without those 2 and the rest of my supporting cast I wouldn’t be doing this still, I guess I’d be in another purpose.
True Dream, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into this industry from being around my mom and my family at the radio station. I learned so much from being around the people who control the radio dials everyday and the artist who try to break records and gain exposure. I’ve seen it all from Independents to major artist and major labels. I learned lessons from Charlamagne tha God , Dj Bill Black, J Phresh, Ant Mack, Neek even the names who wasn’t on the radio played a big part of my up bringing around music and the industry. I knew I was destined it was just the matter of when. My music has always had different moods and I’ve never boxed myself in to one genre but Rnb and those vibed out songs are my fans favorite right now. Atlantis my most recent project got 5k first week plays with little promotion from outside companies but it’s undeniably growing and growing and I’m only getting better. I record myself and others as an engineer at the World Famous Audio Box so mixing all of my skills in the best possible situation is only getting me closer to exactly where I’m gonna be. I’m most proud of the Loverboy “Hoodies for Hope” I did for the homeless in my hometown Columbia, SC and just seeing the smiles and love from the people of my city. I’m planning on doing it this Winter but for the Carolinas in general now that I’m a Charloteer! True Dream Juan has been my name since High school, I was in a group with my best friends (brothers) called True Dream and we took over pep rallies and took over the school End of Junior to Senior Year. We all grew up and had different goals and we all succeeded and I’m proud of us too. Long Live Foreń “True Dream Member and a pioneer South Carolina sound of music”. I’m also proud of myself for not giving up.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I feel like as days go by small side quests are also added to my mission and goal. My goal since a kid was to be an Artist, Icon, Leader with the ability to make you feel the song the way Micheal Jackson did, or Stevie Wonder or in todays time Ty Dolla or Ye. I wanted to be able to get my mom and grandma the house, the car, and have them relaxed and at my shows when they could just to show them what they started. Ever since they both left my focus is finishing but finishing at full speed. It’s not an easy task but nothing great ever came easy.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
After my mom passed I decided to become a caretaker for my Nana and step up for my little sister and become her guardian. I didn’t think twice because my family was all I knew and I’m still willing to do anything and put my life on line for them. Now that we not together all I want to do is be able to keep my future family and the family that’s here closer than ever.
