We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laura Frantz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laura below.
Alright, Laura thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I realized at the age of 7 that reading held a special magic and that writing was even more transforming. To put words on paper and create another world entirely through one’s imagination was truly mind-boggling even as a child. I wasn’t good at sports or music or much of anything but something resonated with writing. I am risk averse and always have been. Wariness and careful consideration are my watchwords. But after writing for myself for almost 40 years, my brother dared me to do something with my writing & share them with others. I set out to prove him wrong. I had no literary agent, had never been to a writing conference, had no writing contacts, nor was I interested in publishing. The very thought filled me with alarm, tantamount to handing someone my diary to read. Writing is a very personal profession, at least when tackling heartfelt history through a very personal lens. I wanted nothing to do with publishing. I sent sample chapters to The Writer’s Edge, an online service for authors to connect with publishers. I thought nothing would come of it and I could close the door on my brother’s idea. Within a few days I had several publishers interested in what would become my debut novel. Then, in a few months, I signed my first contract for not one book but three! I was still dragging my feet at this point but now, 15 traditionally published novels later and one hybrid novella, I’m so grateful for taking a huge risk and embracing the writing gift and path. it’s what I was created to do and I will finish life with the deep satisfaction that I gave my books and readers my best.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a historical fiction novelist. Fifteen of my novels have been published by Revell Books, an imprint of Baker Publishing Group. I also have one hybrid novella, a companion story to one of my Revell novels, that just released from Story Architect. My latest contract will see more books coming in the next few years. I’m active on social media, particularly Facebook and Instagram. I also have an author newsletter that you can sign up for on my website, www.laurafrantz.net. I love connecting with readers and sharing books, not just my own.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I would advise any and all aspiring authors to make two key investments early in their career. First, a bonafide, professional website that reflects you and your brand and books. Second, create an author newsletter to send regularly, even seasonally. Make sure the sign-up for your newsletter is on your website’s home page. I wish I’d taken this advice early on as it’s so crucial and will reap many benefits for you and your readers.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Researching and writing the best historical fiction novels I can widens my reach and introduces me to new readers. Word of mouth is still the most powerful promo. I’m so thankful for those who share about books they love and are inspired by!
