We recently connected with Chickabass and have shared our conversation below.
Chickabass, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
When I first asked for payment, it was because I felt ready to start charging for my work. But the prospect of requesting money was daunting. I worried about coming across as pushy or greedy and feared the client might question the value of my work or reconsider their commitment. I second-guessed whether I had set the right price and whether I was overstepping by discussing money. Even now, talking about rates still feels awkward and uncomfortable, no matter how many times I’ve done it.
After drafting and redrafting my request, and taking a few deep breaths, I finally mustered the courage to hit send. Each minute of waiting felt like an eternity, filled with uncertainties and what-ifs. I replayed every conversation with the client, hoping my request was received as a professional and necessary step in our business relationship.
When the client’s reply came, confirming the invoice and expressing appreciation for the work, a wave of relief washed over me. That first payment wasn’t just about the money—it was a powerful affirmation of my skills and the value others saw in them. It marked a key transition from being a creative enthusiast to a professional who could manage both the artistic and business aspects of my work. The sense of accomplishment was immense, though the journey was a mixed bag: I earned $100 for that first song but didn’t get paid for the rest. Go figure.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
One of my greatest assets is my ear. This ability allows me to deeply understand and connect with musical projects, providing clients with a level of insight and guidance that’s both intuitive and informed. I believe that starting with a clear vision is crucial, rather than getting caught up in trends or what’s currently popular. Encouraging my clients to explore and express their own unique voice and truth is at the heart of what I do. It’s about helping them discover their own path and ensuring their work resonates authentically.
I’m dedicated to supporting my clients in finding and developing their own sound, and I’m proud to be part of their creative journey. My approach is all about fostering individuality and ensuring that each project reflects the true essence of the artist’s vision
I’m passionate about music and have always sought opportunities that would propel me in that direction. Even though I wasn’t exactly sure what path to take, I knew I wanted to be deeply involved in music in some capacity. My journey began in middle school when I first picked up an instrument, and that initial spark has only grown stronger over time.
Throughout my career, I’ve taken every opportunity that came my way to advance my skills and understanding of the music industry. Whether it was performing, composing, or working behind the scenes, each experience has helped me hone my craft and build a solid foundation.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to be able to bring home a Grammy or plaque to show my parents (and myself) that it was worth it.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
One key thing to understand about the creative journey is how fluid and evolving it is, much like our own personal growth. As humans, we constantly change and adapt based on the experiences we face throughout life. Our values, perspectives, and interests shift over time, and our creative journey mirrors this fluidity.
Just as we evolve, so does our artistic style and preferences. What we are passionate about at one stage in life might not hold the same allure later on. This is a natural part of growth and exploration. Creatives often find that their work evolves as they gain new experiences, learn new skills, and encounter different influences.
So, it’s important to approach the artistic evolution of others with an open mind and understanding. When a creative decides to take a different route or shift their style, it’s often a reflection of their personal journey and growth. It’s not necessarily a departure from their true self but rather an exploration of new dimensions of their creativity.
