We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sayge Jenkins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sayge, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I hope I’m remembered as the photographer that made my clients feel safe. Everytime we are in front of the camera we are vulnerable. It doesn’t have to be boudoir photography to make a person feel awkward or slightly uncomfortable. So many of us don’t know what to do with our hands. We really aren’t liking the outfit that fit fine 2 hours ago now. I want my clients to feel beautiful/handsome/adorable, safe and captured well. I want to be the one that made them laugh and helped them be comfortable in their own skin.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a portrait photographer. I do mostly natural light work but I just started on studio work. I’m super excited for what that will bring. I photograph everything from seniors to weddings and the occasional baseball/softball game. I hand edit every image. There’s no presets/filters used here because I feel like they can limit the potential some photos may have. I’m so proud of the leaps and bounds I’ve made in the last 8 years! I’ve invested so much in my education and I feel like it’s paid off. I really try to build relationships with my clients.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I am consistent. My work is consistent. I put in the work and I show up. Every client is important to me and I hope they know that!

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I just want to make people happy, truly. I want to give people confidence and memories that will last them forever. My favorite “this is why I do this” moment was at a wedding. The bride had a photo from when she was little that she wanted recreated with her grandpa. She surprised him with these tootsie pops they had been photographed and asked if he remembered. It made me tear up watching them and knowing that those photos will still be so important to her 50 years from now. This is so beyond just clicking a button and doing something to pass the time.
