We recently connected with Josef Kaufmann and have shared our conversation below.
Josef, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
It took a lot of practice over the years. I did go to school for art and design, however, I also spent a lot of time on my own teaching myself and practicing. The internet has many other creatives that are glad to help and there are also dozens of videos and tutorials available for free. Skill-wise everything can be learned all you really need is the perseverance and drive to work and enhance your skills. Obstacle wise I have had a few, I post all of my art to social media, and sometimes the piece bombs which definitely drains my motivation sometimes, and other times I have spent days on a piece and it just never really seems to turn out the way I want it too. Usually I just take a break and step away from it to then later return, which helps most of the time. But nothing ever stood in my wat of learning more as there are so many various resources available.

Josef, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I always really liked movies and to this day I still do. I got into graphic design a few years ago, and then later in late 2022 found out about alternative posters and a market for freelance poster designers. So I spent the last few years creating art and posters related to movies and shows I really enjoy. I currently work freelance making posters for films. I find myself easy and reliable to work with and would love to work on more films in the future. I am really proud of the work I have done.
I feel like most of my posters stand out from others as I really like to make my stuff stand out in composition and style. I also really want to work on album covers as well as some of my personal work is said to make really cool cover art.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I would really like to work on a franchise poster for Disney or Warner Bros. I am a huge Star Wars and Marvel fan so having the chance to work on something like that would be a dream come true. I strive to grow my skills and recognition in hopes of someday achieving that goal.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Definitely free stock image sites. There are some really high-end free stock image sites where you can get high-resolution images which just makes posters look so much better because I don’t have to fix any blurriness or pixelation within the images. And in general not really looking into the dozens of various tutorials and resources online, I never really realized how much there is and how detailed they are until I actually went searching for certain videos and resources. Which really helps improve one’s skills. There really is a video or article for anything.
