We recently connected with Cal. and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, CAL. thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
The first time I ever earned a dollar with my craft I was ecstatic. Mostly because it was from something Ive done for myself for years. I worked for a Record Label in Los Angeles Named HRDRV records. I was brought on to do visualizer promotions for musicians.
I learned alot in those years and one thing that stood out for me in my business, which I learned quickly is to make sure you are valuable and determine what peoples needs are.
Once I figured out what was needed and sought out for, I started offering more. All it took for me to get more inspired was $10. My first $10 was an eye opener for me because it wasnt the amount i gained, it was knowing the fact that I can sell what I know.
The most time consuming and over scrutinizing part of it all was determining pricing and options. Me being a very generous individual I started doing more for what I was charging, so In my beginnings I was definitely cutting myself short.
I’ve had to make adjustments and really understand my value and time and price accordingly which wasnt always fun.
What brings me the most joy is bringing everyones goals to reality and that to me is really priceless.
CAL., love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My entry into my business of music marketing has always been me being an artist myself and looking for more individuals that have the same passion and interests.
My craft has always been fun, fufilling and rewarding so it was never a job for me but more of an outlet. Everything I learned in my journey, I shared and gave tips and advice. I learned very quickly that everyone loves tips and advice so I leaned into that more which brought me more fans, customers and supporters.
Currently I offer a variety of offerings which include Playlist Pitching, Facebook/Instagram Ads, Digital Programmatic Advertising, Magazine Write ups and Influencer Marketing.
What sets me apart is I offer so much that musicians dont need to look for multiple people for different marketing strategies. Me and my team can handle it all in one stop shop.
I would love for more artists to connect with me and learn more about marketing, so that they can bring more value to themselves and these are tips I share so artists can be themselves more. The more artists are themselves, the more content they will make so more fans are aware of them.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to find talent or businesses that has great potential and help them thrive in their own way.
Everyday I find Stars, and most of the time they dont realize it themselves.
I make sure to pinpoint their achievements and what I find thats great about them and boost their confidence to the point that they no longer hold themselves back.
To be great you have to know you are first and not worry about what others may think. My biggest advice to finding supporters and fans is to be a huge fan of yourself first and show it, so others without realizing become a fan of you as well.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Ok so this is going to be very specific advice, As a creative we mostly overthink of what people will think about what were sharing or showing and this will hinder you alot because of the amount of time we all put into over thinking.
I had to unlearn and untrain myself into believing that noone is over judging me or caring so much that I shouldnt share my craft.
Once you realize this and put out more content, more fans, customers and supporters will gravitate to you and be more interested in what you have to offer.
I know the moment I post more, I get more orders come in compared to when I’m not posting even if its just on my instagram stories.
So the true key is to be yourself, show yourself more and dont over think it, post it and think about it later. I promise you, being your true self will open more opportunities for you.
