Poetree, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?

Although media has changed drastically through the years, I wish I had started in my craft at an early age. I would have had more practice, thus being more skilled, and most likely had better opportunities.

I felt (and still feel) like I always had the talent but don’t know how to get it out. Since I never had much finances or support, I have always found out and done everything on my own. It has been difficult navigating technology when I’m not used to it. Young children using it to their advantage has been an inspiration.

Poetree, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I discovered Hip Hop at the age of six when I was taken into foster care and they were playing rap videos in the living room. When I lived with my grandfather at the age of nine, I discovered poetry and plays. Combining the arts, I became interested in songwriting, poetry, and acting. As a teenager, I chose to express myself through those mediums. As an adult, I took it further and began recording music, turning poems into spoken word, and auditioning for television and movie roles.

What I think sets me apart from others is having a unique perspective and expressing it through a means of Black excellence and uplifting my culture. I am most proud when my works are finessed at a level of expertise and others are able to connect and reflect upon them.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?

Society can provide opportunities in which artists can receive pay for their works.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?

I wish I knew about grants, scholarships and residencies earlier in my artistic journey.
