We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Juliet Mendez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Juliet, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned a lot of what i know now through self taught practice. YouTube was my cake Instructor, being able to go back and rewatch the steps over and over was super helpful. Having a partner who also loved to bake and decorate cakes before me, he taught me a lot of what i know. To speed up my learning process i could have attended some in person cake decorating classes or even took on more orders. The only obstacle i think that stood in the way for me was time, having a full time job and very little time to explore my cake journey i feel did hold me back a bit. Once i knew i wanted to focus on cakes as a full time job i was able to really execute intricate designed cakes and larger cake orders.
Juliet, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Juliet, from Houston, Tx. I am a small business owner. I specialize in custom cakes, cupcakes, decorated sugar cookies, macarons, custom packaged desserts such as lollipops, chocolate bars, & homemade candy. I offer many custom K-pop desserts in where i sell them at Cup sleeve events in the Bellaire area. These cup sleeve events involve celebrating many artist music milestones, birthdays, and or anniversaries. The pop up events really set me apart from other small businesses because i sell custom desserts no other baker can offer, my ideas and custom packaging can not be replicated. I feel that my ideas are one of a kind and really show off my passion for k-pop & desserts, i fuse the two in a way that wows my customer’s and keeps them coming back for more. I love to come up with new designs/ packaging ideas and always have a fresh mind when it comes to new ideas. I am most proud of working with Live Nation, Toyota Center, smart Financial center & many other music halls here in Houston. I was able to create some amazing cakes for some of my favorite music artist such as ENHYPEN, Kid Cudi, Kendrick Lamar, The 1975 & more! I would like my family, friends, and followers to know that i appreciate them so very much for taking a chance and trying my desserts, spending their hard earned money and coming back for more. weather you’re a frequent, or new customer i want you to know that i always strive to use the highest quality ingredients such as organic eggs, flour & milk. Belgium chocolate and European butter are used to ensure my baked goods taste incredible.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Honestly just being yourself! Post what you want and like, you will attract followers who vibe with your interest. Start by posting Videos if you’re comfortable with showing yourself, people like to see behind the scenes of how you perfect your craft. I felt shy at first posting some behind the scenes but i felt comfortable after a while because i knew who was watching my videos and they were receiving positive comments and shares! Posting at least 1 to 2 times a day helps your page to stay active. It might feel overwhelming at first and if you feel it doesn’t work for you theirs’s absolutely nothing wrong with that at least you tried! Interacting with your customer’s in person at pop-ups and having a QR code for them to scan helps with them knowing where you’ll be next and helps in them sharing your post.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a cake artist is creating memories for my customer’s. Cakes are such an important part of celebration’s. When i was younger seeing the cake was very exciting for me and i remember all my childhood cakes because its something everyone gathers around stares at during the celebrations. Also hearing people say ” I remember the cake you made me” is always so rewarding as well because i know i did my job right
