We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brandon Oropallo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I love being a business owner! For so many of my jobs, I suffered from imposter syndrome, and in a few of my jobs, I was definitely an imposter, faking my way through work that I didn’t understand and didn’t excite me. Owning my own business has freed my from that — I know exactly what I’m talking about, all the time, and I’m good at the work I do. I miss the camraderie of a regular job, but I meet so many people with the work I do.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
DFW Scavenger Hunt is a company that builds puzzles and games for folks who want to try new things, people who are looking for a unique activity, and those who want to challenge themselves while connecting with others. We specialize in team building in the Dallas area, and it’s a thrill to be able to provide businesses with a way to show appreciation to their staff without resorting to forced fun. We love Dallas and commit to celebrating what makes the city unique in all we offer. We’re the only business of our kind that’s born, built, and run by people who live in DFW.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We’re known as the best at what we do simply because our offering is so unique that there’s no competition. But we don’t take that as an excuse to cut corners. We are meticulous and precise, insistent on finely crafted, intricate puzzles that offer aha moments to our clients. We’re not an app, we’re not some thing on your phone — we offer a personal touch, a real, tangible product that gets people outdoors and into action. And there’s a person there with you — our hosts are experts at their jobs, great not just at puzzles but also at working with people, with curating a personal experience, and with cracking a few jokes. We make sure our clients are well-taken care of, and we offer bespoke experiences unlike any other in Dallas, made especially for the client.

Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
To say we manufacture a product would be misleading, but there’s a lot of manufacturing that goes into creating a great experience for our clients. We create scavenger hunts that are ideal for team building and parties, particularly in North Texas, and we do so through a process that we’ve honed over our years in business. Research is key — a scavenger hunt is based on the geography of a neighborhood, like Downtown Grapevine or the Dallas Arts District, and we spend a lot of time learning about the culture, history, and geography of a place where we’re planning a hunt. Designing the puzzles is also an essential part of what we do, and we’ve learned which types of puzzles work, inspiring moments of creativity and discovering, while also finding out what sort of challenges don’t quite make the cut. And finally, we know that storytelling is essential to a memorable experience. With our scavenger hunts, you aren’t just crossing city streets, you’re exploring forbidden jungles, chasing runaway train robbers, or helping a dashing art thief elude capture. We thrive on creating personalized, unforgettable events for our clients, and we’re always working on something new.
