Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmin Jaramillo
Hi Jazmin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Over a decade ago, I embarked on my beauty journey, starting as a freelance makeup artist and attending Makeup First School in Chicago. Classes were a little costly, so I turned to YouTube for makeup tutorials to “perfect” my skills.
At 30, a sudden move to the US Virgin Islands became a pivotal moment in my career. In St. Thomas, I saw the opportunity to continue freelancing so I offered small makeup classes to friends, which soon led to requests for event makeup.
It took about two years after the pandemic for me to embrace the entrepreneurial wave. I began marketing myself around St. Thomas, optimizing my website with SEO, and sharing content on TikTok & Instagram. The efforts paid off when other makeup artists on the island started requesting my assistance with weddings.
A defining moment in my career was booking my own wedding gig, a milestone that felt incredibly rewarding. Now, I rank on the first page of Google, receive wedding requests from surrounding islands, and love traveling to these beautiful destinations for my work.
I’m currently working on expanding my brand by creating digital products, a newsletter, and a lifestyle beauty blog for my clients and an audience of beauty enthusiasts. My journey is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the endless possibilities of entrepreneurship.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some of the struggles I have had throughout my entrepreneurial makeup artistry journey involved confidence. However, you can’t gain confidence and momentum without making errors. I listened to many motivational books to help me shut down imposter syndrome and invested in a few online courses to understand influence, affiliate, and content creation. Yes, there is free advice out there but it just takes you in loops and you’ll feel like quitting. Also, living on a small island as an entrepreneur who consumes products to run their business is difficult. Finding the right online beauty stores to ship to St. Thomas at a reasonable price, or to ship here at all, is challenging. So, I would make my product purchases whenever I traveled back stateside. St. Thomas also seems to be off the map to the online world. When I need to choose my state or country, almost all the US Virgin Islands does not pop up as an option. :(
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a destination wedding makeup artist in the U.S. Virgin Islands and an aspiring travel blogger. When I receive an inquiry for bridal makeup, I take my client through a secure online booking process. As their wedding date approaches, I follow up with them to ensure that their day will be perfect and everything will run smoothly. On the day of their wedding, I travel to their “getting ready” location, whether it’s a hotel suite or a private villa off the beautiful shores of the Caribbean.
I’m known for my neutral, beachy bride makeup looks and content creation. When I travel for a wedding, which is every booking, I document the experience and create fun, educational, and inspiring videos for future brides to get to know their makeup artist (me) before inquiring. Marketing myself this way has been great for my business and I am very proud to be reaching & helping potential clients online.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Yes, Greenlights by Matthew Mcconaughey, Atomic Habits by James Clare, and You are a Badass (these helped a lot with self-doubt.) I also love Mel Robbins who is so inspirational and doesn’t give a F(*&^ what others say which neither should you. :)
