We recently connected with Juanita Gain and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Juanita , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Currently, I’m working on a new project. It will be a book of poetry and art. Each poem will have a painting. Painting is something new I have added to my artistic style. I have mostly done digital art so this project is exciting and challenging. I am learning new skills and it can be difficult to bridge the gap between digital art and the canvas that sits on my easel. However, I have always been inspired when I have challenged myself. Using real paintbrushes and paint allows me to do things I could not do on a computer.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
What sets me apart from most in the industry is that I write poetry and create art for each poem that I write. Some poets place their poems on creative backgrounds. However, I have always thought this technique distracts the eye from the poem. No, I write the poem first, so it can easily be read. Then I create a piece of art. Both are meant to complement each other. Together, viewed separately, they give an in-depth story. The poem is more than a caption; it too is a work of art. The poem is a work of literary art with a piece of visual art to enhance meaning, emotion, and understanding.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most important thing for me about my creativity and being an artist and poet is being able to express myself. But, it’s more than that. Self-expression is a given. It is also about making an impact on others. When someone reads my poetry and tells me, “That made me think,” I absolutely love that. What difference does it make if you are expressing yourself and no one cares? There has to be Meaning.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission in life is to leave something behind for my three sons. I am not talking about riches or wealth. Throughout history, there have been many starving artists, writers, and creative people. What I would like is to have my debts paid, my funeral paid for, and perhaps a decent life insurance policy that my sons can use to help them in the future. What happens with my work after I’m gone? Only God knows.
