We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amrit Atwal a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amrit , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning and going through the process of concept art was not an easy path. I myself never done art until 2018 seriously. Coming from a sports background and getting into mechanical engineering, never would have thought I would have made the switch. I learned a lot through Brainstorm School on how to design and making cool environments. Want to really shout out Thomas Brillante and James Paick for all that Brainstorm has offered . Knowing what I know now, I would have totally got into concept art in high school, it would have sped up a lot of things. Learning perspective and how to draw in 3d space helped with with everything. Understanding my fundamentals first before jumping into the advanced stuff in art was ideal. There were many obstacles in my way, there was a lot of tension between me and family on the idea will I become anything, am I wasting my time, dropping out of college didn’t help either. Also just understanding the craft was difficult. I had many nights were I wanted to just give up and not do art anymore, but sticking to it and breaking down everything when understanding how lighting works, comps and designing. It has payed off, but there is still more to achieve.

Amrit , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Heyo my name is Amrit I tend to go by Am/BigAm. A little bit about me, I am 28 and was born in Fairfield, California (~1hr from Sacramento). I started my art journey back in 2018, I doodled around earlier in my years, but for being serious it started in 2019 at Brainstorm School. When I was younger I always thought I’d be a football player since I have played from Middle School-College Football. As I progressed, life changed for me and ended up going towards Mechanical Engineering and honestly as much as I loved working on cars, I did not like math at all. So with the help of my family I got the support on pursuing art. As I found more info about art I dedicated it to Environment Concept Art after learning some fundamentals. Like they say you will always be working on your fundamentals all your life. While pursuing my career in art I have had many hobbies on the side such as, playing D&D, building Warhammer figures, watching American Football, lifting weights, spending time with the ones I love, travel and getting into offroad trucks. Currently I work as the Lead Admin Marketing/Advertising for Brainstorm School as well as Freelance Concept Artist for various studios. Hoping to get a full time studio gig. That is the goal! Many projects I have worked on is Apex Mobile, a VR video game and many NDA that cannot say at the moment. I am slowly getting into 3D printing and wanting to sell products in the near future. One thing that sets me apart from many others is the experience I have had in many different areas just not art.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I believe, the most rewarding aspect as a creative or artist, is seeing your work in a game or just seeing it up and displayed whether it is social media or in a game or in a film.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The main goal for me has always been landing something big, Whether that is a consistent art studio job or whether it is towards my own 3D print shop starting up in the near future. I want to have the freedom of what I want to do in life, but still make a good living off of it. I am happy on where I am at, but definitely want to keep growing in many areas.
